What Are Addiction Support Groups?
After realizing your addiction and seeking help, you should consider including addiction support groups in your addiction aftercare treatment plan.
Support groups remain a source of supportive structure for most individuals during recovery.
Whether it be through a 12-step program or Smart Recovery, or a therapy group, these support systems give you more accountability, in addition to a group that can relate to your experiences with substance abuse.
To learn more about support groups and how we use them at Resurgence, read on.
Understanding Support Groups
It can be nearly impossible to defeat addiction on your own without the help of like-minded people and professionals in addiction treatment.
Support or ‘self-help’ groups can be a vital part of the recovery process for people who misuse drugs or alcohol. These groups are designed to provide a supportive space for people who have faced the same challenges or had similar experiences. Here, people can share their stories, receive encouragement, and hear about ways to manage their recovery.
As a person struggling with addiction enters treatment, group therapy sessions and attendees are designed to give you a broader safety net to rely on when outside circumstances become too much to handle.
Understanding Support Groups
At Resurgence, we offer several support groups during and after rehabilitation. We also encourage you to research each type of support group and learn how each one can help you based on your requirements to maintain sobriety.
Whether it be a drug treatment support group or alcohol treatment support group, here are some of the most common options:
12-Step Support Groups:
As a short background, the foundation of 12-step programs was to encourage the individual struggling with substance abuse to acknowledge they are not powerful enough to overcome their cravings on their own, and they require the strength and support to do so from that of a higher power.
You can expect any of the following from a 12-step support program:
- Regular meetings, which are often weekly meetings
- Member-led, where members share their stories to help try to solve or offer advice to those in similar situations
- Active participation, where whether you talk or listen, the program encourages you to participate in some fashion
- Mentorship through a “sponsor,” where this person will provide support and guidance during your recovery journey
Smart Recovery Process:
According to SMART Recovery, the program is: “A global community of mutual support groups. At meetings, participants help one another resolve problems with any addiction (to drugs or alcohol to even gambling or eating disorders).
Participants find and develop the power within themselves to change and lead fulfilling and balanced lives guided by our science-based and sensible 4-Point Program®.”
The four points include:
- Building and maintaining motivation
- Coping with urges
- Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Living a balanced life
Effects of Support Groups
While support groups are supplemental to a recovery program, they have proven to be extremely effective. This is especially true during the first year of sobriety.
Through sharing experiences and traumas, support group participants have found more sobriety success when frequently attending these groups.
In particular, some positive effects of joining addiction support groups include:
- The inspiration to start a healthier lifestyle
- Gaining a supportive group of peers
- Newfound accountability for sobriety
- Having a structured activity that is catered to sobriety
Mental Illness in Support Groups
Support groups are great for holding yourself accountable in many cases. Please note most will state plainly that you should also seek professional help for your mental illness.
However, while most support group-goers are not certified to help an individual suffering from the majority of mental illnesses, support groups have been known to inspire participants to seek treatment for mental illness. Many support groups for recovery have plenty of individuals who suffer from mental health issues. Some support groups even cater to those who suffer from both addiction and mental illness, referred to as a dual diagnosis.
If you find the right group that discusses mental illness, it can be a great addition to your recovery plan.

Inpatient and Outpatient Programs:
We understand that it is essential to approach recovery differently according to each individual’s lifestyle.
Our outpatient drug and alcohol treatment are alternative options for those who cannot attend our residential program. It is ideal for employed people, who cannot leave their jobs or those who cannot leave their families.
It is also a more affordable option. Each inpatient facility provides close supervision by highly-trained staff, 24-hour medical care, therapy sessions, healthy meal options, and a relaxing environment. Both offer you the option of participating in support groups.
Our Approach to Rehabilitation:
We use a customized, patient-centric approach to rehabilitation. If you come to us for help and are seeking out support groups, we begin by completing an assessment to determine a plan for your full recovery.
Our treatment programs address all the underlying conditions for addiction to allow you to take ownership of your recovery. Our customized approach, coupled with our staff of highly motivated and well-trained professionals, ensure that you or your loved one will receive excellent care during and after treatment.
Some of the rehabilitation treatments we offer include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Stress Management
- Group Therapy
- Medication (to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings)
Intensive Outpatient Program:
If you complete recovery in an inpatient or outpatient setting or want extra support, please check out our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Trying to manage your recovery and your mental health issues by yourself can be especially challenging after rehab.
In IOP, you will have the flexibility to maintain much of your normal daily routine while working on maintaining your sobriety. IOP is a good treatment option if you do not have the means to leave your job or if you have to stay home for any other reason. You will receive support from therapy groups and gain the ability to apply the skills you learned during treatment, all while maintaining your normal lifestyle.
Resurgence Payment and Insurance
