Alcohol & Drug Rehab & Detox In Marin, California

With the fifth-highest income per capita in the US at $91,483, Marin is one of the most affluent locales in the country. In 2017, Time included the county in its list of the wealthiest cities in the US, where it made the top five. Apart from economic wealth, Marin is also blessed with natural resources, thanks to its numerous ecosystems and high level of biodiversity.

The level of opioid use and death in the country has not as been troubling as that of other places in the country, but it still exists. In 2018, there were 28 fatal drug overdoses in the city.

The State of Addiction in Marin

Since the grassroots RxSafe Marin coalition was formed, it has made a significant impact on the community by reducing prescription drug abuse. Doctors and other clinicians in Marin County wrote fewer prescriptions for opioid pain killers, which resulted in fewer opioid overdoses. Opioid prescribing in Marin has decreased 48 percent since 2014.

In 2014 the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, with the aid of health care providers, law enforcement officials, and community members, formed RxSafe Marin, a coalition dedicated to reducing harm from prescription drug abuse and saving lives. With the help of local hospitals and the San Francisco Marin Medical Society, the coalition was able to create safe opioid prescribing guidelines, paired them with intensive community education about the potential harms of opioids. As a result, opiates in the community were reduced while increasing the amount of safely disposed medications.

The Problem of Fentanyl

While Marin is celebrating the drops in overdoses and needless prescriptions, RxSafe Marin has sounded the alarm on fentanyl use. Fentanyl is a potent opioid that is generally manufactured and sold illegally. It is now the leading cause of overdoses nationally and local deaths have been registered. Of the 28 overdoses last year, five were fentanyl-related.

Because of the growing numbers of overdoses related to illicit or non-prescription opioids, RxSafe Marin is focusing more on providing support and access to treatment for Marin residents struggling with addiction from Fentanyl and other drugs.

Addiction Problems

For some, addiction begins with teenage experimentation. Teens often dabble in drugs or alcohol as part of a pattern of youthful curiosity or rebellion. In time, they find they can no longer control when they use drugs or how much drugs or alcohol they can take.

For others, addictions begin due to workplace pressures. They lean on substances to help them cope with their jobs and the struggles they must deal with every day. In time, the drugs become a critical part of life that they have no control over.
