Alcohol & Drug Rehab & Detox In San Mateo, California

Founded in 1856, San Mateo City is located in California Bay Area, between the cities of San Francisco and Palo Alto. San Mateo is part of the broader Silicon Valley region and has served as the home for many technology firms.

The city is known for its parks, trails, and beaches, as well as wildlife. The city’s eastern portion is more densely populated, while its western half is characterized by more rural and undeveloped land. In terms of living standards, San Mateo is one of the most affluent cities in the US, with a median household income of $91,421.

While opioid use in San Mateo is currently not as problematic as that of many other communities, San Mateo County Health still wants its citizens to be aware of the risks of addiction and overdose. In just one year, over 24 million opioid pills were prescribed and filled by San Mateo residents, or 43 pills for every resident over 18, according to San Mateo County Health. In 2018, the city saw 40 opioid-related deaths, or five per 100,000 people.

Addiction Problems

For some, the addictions begin with teenage experimentation. Teens try drugs or alcohol as part of a pattern of teenage curiosity or rebellion. In time, they find they can no longer control when they use drugs or how much they take.

For others, addictions begin due to workplace pressures. They lean on substances to help them cope with their jobs and the struggles they must deal with every day. In time, the drugs become a critical part of life that they have no control over.

No matter how your addiction began, there are treatments available that can help you get control once more. There are publicly funded and charitable programs that can provide help for free, and there are private-pay options that offer similar support.

How the Community Is Working Together

Early in 2019, San Mateo has joined more than 1,300 cities, cities, and groups in suing opioid prescription drug makers for their alleged role in fueling the nation’s opioid epidemic. In the lawsuit filed in February, the city’s counsel said that 26 city residents died last year from opioid-related causes, in addition to 11 people who died from heroin use. Moreover, 33 San Mateo residents died due to fentanyl, heroin, and the use of other opioids in 2017, in addition to 112 self-reported overdoses.

San Mateo claims that the city is losing millions of dollars annually due to spending drug treatment, emergency room visits, law enforcement, and social services. It alleged that the manufacturers of pain-killing drugs such as oxycodone and fentanyl misled doctors and patients about the risks of those drugs and failed to report suspicious drug sales to authorities.
