LGBTQ Drug Rehab California: Finding a Supportive and Inclusive Facility

LGBTQ Drug Rehab California: Finding a Supportive and Inclusive Facility

Members of the LGBTQ community face unique issues that may affect their mental health. The stress associated with “coming out” to the discrimination they might experience as a result of their sexual orientation and identity can leave them vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. Feeling marginalized and unwelcome by one’s family or the community at large can have a profound effect on one’s mental health and sense of self. Finding support is often the key to managing the stressors associated with LGBTQ stigma and discrimination.

Resurgence Behavioral Health is an LGBTQ-friendly substance abuse treatment center that specializes in both addiction recovery and mental health treatment. It’s not uncommon for people with substance use disorders to also have a dual diagnosis involving a mental health disorder like post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, or depression. Members of the LGBTQ can get individualized support at our treatment center, support that takes their unique issues and challenges into account. Let our experienced clinicians help you build a strong recovery foundation that allows you to successfully manage your condition and thrive in all aspects of your life.

Ways Addiction Affects the LGBTQ Community

Members of the LGBTQ community are at increased risk of developing a substance abuse problem. Many people turn to drugs or alcohol to “self-medicate” negative feelings like sadness or loneliness. Others may turn to them to escape the stressors in their life, which can be profound. While anyone can experience persistent negative emotions and chronic stress, people who understand how to manage these issues in healthy ways are less likely to turn to drugs and alcohol.

When someone does develop a pattern of alcohol or drug abuse, it can quickly turn to addiction. Addiction affects the LGBTQ in many ways, including:

  • Homophobia and discrimination (even from family members and friends)
  • Internalized homophobia
  • Feeling isolated
  • Bullying
  • Harassment
  • Fear of hate crimes
  • Lack of support from family, friends, or community

Although attitudes and behaviors toward the LGBTQ have improved significantly in recent years, most members of the LGBTQ have experienced some level of homophobia, which can have a negative impact on their sense of self and well-being. Once a person develops an addiction, they can only manage it; substance addictions are chronic conditions. However, without effective management that includes abstinence, the condition is likely to worsen, leading to negative mental and physical health outcomes.

Statistics of Addiction Among the LGBTQ Community

Currently, members of the LGBTQ are more than twice as likely to use illegal drugs like heroin than individuals who are heterosexual. They are also at increased risk, nearly double, as people who are not members of the LGBTQ community. These statistics provide a clear signal that this group is not only at increased risk of developing substance abuse problems, but they need more support within their community designed to prevent and treat substance addiction.

Put another way, nearly 10% of the general population in the US has a substance abuse issue or abuses drugs. Some estimates put substance abuse among the LGBTQ at 30%. It’s not a stretch to suggest that the increased levels of social isolation, family rejection, discrimination, and violence are serious factors that heighten the risk for a member of the LGBTQ to turn to drugs or alcohol to help quell their stress.

What You Can Expect During LGBTQ Addiction Rehab

Each person has a unique history and experience. Even so, members of the LGBTQ community often share many issues that impact their substance abuse problem. That’s why many treatment centers single out groups that can benefit from special treatment tracks or support. For instance, there are many treatment programs that are designed for Native Americans, veterans, police, pregnant women, etc…These programs offer substance abuse treatment that takes group challenges and other related factors into account for a more informed level of care.

At Resurgence, we provide individualized treatment for all of our clients, but members of the LGBTQ community can also expect an inclusive environment where their issues are known. We provide both empathetic and effective care, helping members of this community find healthy ways to cope with their addiction as well as the issues that led to their dependence on drugs or alcohol.

During our addiction treatment programs, we feature evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy. This form of treatment helps people understand the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We also offer alternative and holistic therapies that enhance recovery. Our treatment center provides dual diagnosis treatment, medication-assisted treatment, and family therapy for clients who need it. While enrolled in our rehab, clients can expect to learn how to manage their condition in our safe, positive treatment center.

Developing a Support System

During treatment at Resurgence, we spend time helping our LGBTQ clients develop a strong support system that can help them achieve long-term recovery. Many clients arrive without a positive support system. They may be isolated from their family. Their social group may involve substantial alcohol and drug abuse. We help our clients find support that is conducive to sober living.

Naturally, during rehab, our therapists, addiction specialists, and other clients provide a high degree of support, but what about after rehab? Relapse prevention demands that recovering individuals have reliable support available when they need it. Ongoing counseling, LGBTQ support groups, a mentor, new sober friends, and new healthy hobbies can help clients keep their recovery progress on track. We put our clients in touch with community resources they can rely on when they need support for the issues they face.
