Yoga and Addiction Treatment

During the time that you’re in drug rehab or alcohol rehab in California, there are several things that you will learn about yourself. Part of the addiction recovery process is finding out more about the events in your life that may have contributed to your alcohol or drug addictions in the first place. One of the things that you may come to enjoy is yoga for addiction. During the time that you were in active addiction, it’s possible that you continuously felt that your mind was always racing, and, to a very real extent, it probably was. You were constantly thinking about either being under the influence of your drug or drink of choice or the next time you would be able to purchase this substance. It’s important to understand that simply because you go through a drug or alcohol treatment program doesn’t mean that these thoughts will simply go away. However, you will have a better understanding of what you need to do to control them and not allow them to control you. This is where yoga comes into play. Yoga can help you to take the deep physical and psychological breath that you need when you’re struggling with cravings or other aspects of your addiction. Through yoga, you will develop a better understanding of yourself and what steps you need to take to maintain your sobriety going forward.

How Yoga is Used in Addiction Recovery

Did you know that every day millions of people struggle with substance abuse? Before you can begin to enjoy the benefits of yoga, you will have to work on tackling the emotional and physical impact that addiction has had on your life. Many people will need to begin their addiction recovery journey in a detox program. During detox, you will have a safe and sober environment that you need to initially remove the influence of drugs and alcohol from your mind and body. The issue becomes when you have a severe addiction, your withdrawal symptoms may be more severe than that of a person that doesn’t. Therefore, it’s highly probable that you will experience withdrawal symptoms which will make it impossible for you to care for yourself. A detox program usually lasts approximately seven days with the worst of your withdrawal symptoms subsiding after the first 72 hours. At that point, you will be able to transition into a treatment program.

Once you work through your detox program, you will be able to focus on your inpatient or outpatient program. It’s at this point that you will also be able to incorporate yoga into your overall recovery program. If you decide to commit to an inpatient treatment program, you will have the opportunity to live on the campus of your treatment facility of choice. During this time, you will have access to your treatment team which can provide you with a certain level of support that you would not have otherwise received. Your treatment team can also collaborate with you to fit in time during your day to practice yoga. Whether you receive more benefits out of yoga first thing in the morning or later at night, you can rest assured that you will have the time that you need to practice yoga while you focus on tackling different aspects of your addiction and recovery.

If you don’t have the flexibility to commit to an inpatient treatment program, there are still recovery options that are available to you. For instance, if you work or go to school, you may find an outpatient program easier to manage. Your treatment team will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan around your work or school schedule. In turn, you will also have the flexibility to frequent different yoga studios in the area around your unique schedule. If your work or school schedule happens to change during the time that you’re in treatment, be sure to communicate this to your treatment team so that they can make the adjustments that you need.

How Yoga Affects the Brain

Many people who have struggled with an addiction to drugs or alcohol are surprised to learn that these substances are something that can change the very way that your brain works. There are certain pathways in your brain that can be altered during the time that you’re in active addiction. Although not consuming this drug or drink of choice can begin to repair these pathways, there are several other things that you can do to restore these pathways, yoga being one of them.

Physical Benefits of Practicing Yoga While in Recovery

There are countless benefits of practicing yoga not only during the time that you’re in drug rehab but long after you are done with your addiction treatment program. Here are just a handful of ways that you can physically benefit as a result of incorporating yoga into your recovery plan:

Weight management

During the time that you were in active addiction, it’s likely that your weight may have fluctuated to either an unhealthy low or an unhealthy high. Adding yoga as part of your overall recovery can help you to recapture a healthy weight. Keep in mind that if you decide to partner with Muse Treatment Center, you will also have the benefit of having access to healthy and nutritious food which can help to make the weight management process that much easier.

Improved self-esteem

One of the great things about yoga is that it will help to strengthen muscles that you may not have focused on before. When you start to lose weight and improve your muscle structure, you will quickly notice an improvement in your overall self-esteem. This means that you can walk into any room and hold your head a little bit higher not only because you have overcome your addiction but also because you are in great physical shape.

Yoga Studios in Orange County

There are several yoga studios that are in the area that you can visit once you complete your time in alcohol and drug rehab. If you need recommendations on the best option for you, here are some of the best places where you can take up practicing yoga:

Bikram Yoga Irvine

Bikram Yoga Irvine is an excellent yoga studio for people who are just beginning their experiences with yoga as well as clients who have experience with this type of health practice. A leading reason why Bikram Yoga Irvine has become so popular is due in large part to the fact that this studio began to offer virtual classes. This studio offers classes seven days a week as early as 6 AM during the week and as late as 8 PM. This makes it all the easier to incorporate a yoga class into your busy day. A good rule of thumb is to call the studio that day to ensure that they have the type of class that you would like at a certain time.
