What Happens at An AA Meeting?

If you have never been to an AA meeting, you may be wondering what to expect or what you are supposed to do. The answer is simple: find out about open meetings near you, and then go to one. All you have to do is show up. You do not need to pay money or sign up for anything (although people may voluntarily contribute to a collection to pay for the venue), and nobody will ask you any intrusive questions. No demands will be placed on you, and there are no obligations to show up again. AA meetings are friendly and relaxed. Some places even offer online meetings. 

Talking about your alcohol addiction or speaking to strangers about a loved one may feel strange at first but it’s okay if you don’t want to talk. All you have to do is sit down with everybody else and listen at first as other members tell their stories about their experiences with substance use disorders in what are called ID meetings. There are other types of meetings called Steps meetings, where the 12-step program is discussed in detail, and there are other types of discussion meetings as well with their own focuses, or those that have a speaker who has come to share their story with the group. A literature meeting centers around AA-approved literature, and meditation meetings include meditation during the time together. Some people choose to arrive early or stay late to get to know others in the group better and to help with set-up or cleaning up afterward, but this is entirely optional.

Is AA For Everyone?
