It’s important to realize that there are several different components of addiction treatment. Regardless of whether you’re combating an addiction to drugs or alcohol, there are certain traditional forms of addiction treatment that you will typically participate in. There are also many decisions that you will need to make as you begin this new stage of your recovery journey.

The first step for many people who are ready to start this process is to work through a detox program. Detox and withdrawal is can be a particularly stressful time in your recovery because you will likely feel a myriad of withdrawal symptoms. Although it may seem appealing to stay home and try to manage these symptoms on your own, this is something that could potentially be a fatal mistake. Detox typically lasts for seven days. When you decide to work through a program at a detox treatment facility, you have the peace of mind of knowing that you will be cared for around the clock by a team of addiction experts who will closely monitor your systems and address them as they come up.

Another important choice that you will need to make is whether you are going to commit to an inpatient or an outpatient treatment program. The noticeable difference between an inpatient and an outpatient treatment program is your physical location throughout the course of your recovery program. An inpatient program, for example, gives you the opportunity to live on the campus of your treatment facility throughout the course of your recovery. In outpatient treatment, on the other hand, you have more flexibility to create your treatment schedule which can revolve around your work or school schedule.

Regardless of whether you decide to commit to an inpatient program or an outpatient one when you come to a treatment facility that is based in Orange County, you will have plenty of opportunities to experience some of the beaches that are local to the area. Over time, you will likely come to find that taking this step is something that you look forward to and can help to keep you focused on the overall goals that you have for your sobriety and health.

Benefits of Being in Nature

The advantages associated with spending more time in nature are seemingly endless. Spending time in nature is even more beneficial for a person that is in addiction recovery for the following reasons:

  • Stress release

There is something that is incredibly calming about being out in nature, particularly after a challenging day. Whether you decide to work out in nature or simply sit and enjoy the environment around you, you will find that taking this step can help you to feel less stressed.

  • An opportunity to experience something new

Whether you decide to go to the beach or you simply decide to go out for a hike, each time you venture out into nature, you will have the opportunity to experience something new and unique.

Benefits of Walking On Sand

If you have never had the experience of walking on a sandy beach barefoot, you are truly missing out on something special. Over and above the relaxation of it, there are several other benefits associated with taking a barefooted walk along the beach:

  • A noticeable change in strength

It should come as no surprise that working along the beach will present certain physical challenges. As your legs fight against the resistance that the sand presents, you will start to notice an improvement in your leg strength and overall physical strength. Just a simple walk along the beach is an excellent way to push the limits and burn fat that you may have added to your body during the time that you were in active addiction.

  • A free foot massage

Did you know that alternating between walking in the sand and walking along the ocean line will give you a free foot massage? In fact, you may notice that your feet feel more relaxed and even softer to the touch at the end of your walk. The sand also acts as a natural exfoliant.

  • An early morning and sunset activity

While it’s true that you can take a walk along the beach at nearly any time of day, your best option would be to opt to do so either first thing in the morning or later at night. This will help to avoid any adverse reactions to consistently being in the sun and may help you to enjoy the process more.

Benefits of Swimming

There is a unique difference between swimming in the ocean and swimming in a pool. Swimming in the ocean brings with it different challenges which are why so many avid swimmers enjoy it. Examples of the benefits of swimming include:

  • Improved heart health

Swimming will instantly cause your heart rate to go up which causes not only fat burn but can also help to maintain a healthy heart. You will quickly notice that your overall cardiovascular fitness will improve. You may be able to breathe easier or do more physical things throughout your day without feeling so worn out.

  • A different type of challenge

If you avidly workout and you have never tried going for a swim before, you may find that swimming is a unique type of challenge that you want to tackle. While running or strength training can present its own set of challenges, swimming is in a category in and of itself because you have to learn to work with the water and focus on your form so that you can get faster. However, similar to addiction, with commitment you will learn that you can get better and healthier with time and practice.

Benefits of Relaxing and Being in the Moment

Any person that has ever struggled with an addiction to drugs or alcohol will tell you that it is difficult if not impossible for them to be active and present at the moment. The reason for this is usually because they are so distracted by when they will be able to next consume their drug of choice. However, when you’re able to slow down the world around you and remove that terrible influence from your life, you have a better opportunity to really enjoy aspects of life that you may not have been aware of before. For example, you may not realize how peaceful it is just to sit on the beach and enjoy watching a sunrise or a sunset. You may also not realize the tranquility that comes along with closing your eyes on the beach and simply listening to the waves crash onto the shore. All of these things are experiences that you may have missed out on during your time in active addiction.
