Thriving in Recovery NA Meetings in Nashville Resurgence Behavioral Health

Finding NA Meetings in Nashville to Support Your Long Term Recovery

During the time that you’re in a rehab program, you will be given an abundance of tools that you will be able to utilize as you adjust back into the world of “normal life”. It’s understood that at times this may be a difficult transition which is why your recovery treatment team will always encourage you to take advantage of attending NA meetings that are local to the Nashville area. Finding the right NA meeting can make all the difference in the world when it comes to maintaining your sobriety and continuing to grow your system of support.

Addiction Treatment that
Just Works

Individualized treatment programs delivered in a comfortable, relaxed setting promote healing in your recovery journey.

What is NA?

Over the years, there has been a traumatic increase in the number of people that are struggling with an addiction to drugs. In 1953, a man named Jimmy Kinnon followed the model of Alcoholics Anonymous but adjusted it slightly so that those that were struggling with drug addiction had the same comradery that is offered through AA. Today, there are countless people throughout not only the United States but around the world to not only overcome their addiction but find the courage and determination to remain sober for the rest of their lives.

The 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is grounded in the idea that when you commit to your recovery and follow the 12 steps that are laid down as a basis for the program, you will be able not only to establish your sobriety but maintain it as well. The official 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous are:

Step One: We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.

Many people find this first step the most difficult one to work through. After all, who likes to admit that there is an aspect of their life that has become completely unmanageable and out of their control? However, this is often the most important step because it means that you are ready to open yourself up to receive the care and the help that you need.

Step Two: We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

This step is meant to be a sign of hope. During the time that you are in active addiction, everything around you can feel completely hopeless. It’s likely that you will feel completely lost. However, once you admit that you have a program, new hope arises in the sense that there are several other people that have gone through their own struggles. There is always a greater power that can guide you.

Step Three: We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

This entire step revolves around finding your higher power: God as we understood him. This is difficult for a person to understand at times because they mistakenly believe that in order to have God in their life they must abide by a conventional form of religion. This isn’t what this step is about, however. This step is about tapping into your higher power so that you can grow closer to that source in your life.

Step Four: We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

During this step, you will do a true examination of yourself including the things that you love about yourself and the things that you would like to change so that you can become a better individual.

Step Five: We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

While making your inventory is important, admitting these shortcomings is critical. This is why you should always go through the steps with a sponsor that you’re able to admit these attributes and navigate them accordingly.

Step 6: We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

You are now in a place where you have accepted that you would like God to remove these defects.

Step 7: We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Removing these shortcomings is a special discussion that you must have with God with the peace of mind of knowing that he will always listen to you and remove them when you are ready.

Step 8: We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Unfortunately, addiction doesn’t only hurt the person with the addiction but it also hurts friends, family, and loved ones. It’s now time for you to make a list of all the people that you may have hurt during the time that you were in active addiction.

Step 9: We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

It’s not important to just identify who you hurt but to make some kind of amends for it. It’s critical to work through this step with your sponsor as it could be possible to harm that person more by your admission, so it’s something that you need to do very carefully.

Step 10: We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Remember, you will be in recovery in some form for the rest of your life. It’s critical that you continue to take personal inventory of yourself and make amends if you do make mistakes.

Step 11: We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Prayer and meditation are critical throughout your recovery journey. This combination can help to calm you and focus so that you never fall back into the trap of addiction.

Step 12: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Once you reach the 12th step, you are finally in a position where you will be able to sponsor someone else through their own recovery journey.

Benefits of Attending Recovery Support Group Meetings in Nashville

Are you on the fence about whether or not a 12 step meeting is the right option for you? The best way to learn more about the tremendous benefits associated with support group meetings is to attend one. When you set aside the time to attend 12 step meetings on a regular basis, you will undoubtedly enjoy the following advantages:

Develop your system of support

One of the best benefits of going to 12 step meetings is that during that time you will have the opportunity to make connections with other people that may have had similar experiences as you throughout the course of their life. While you will begin to build this important system of support during your time in treatment, it will only continue to grow and expand as you begin to attend more meetings. A good rule of thumb is to attend a couple of meetings in your area to decide which one you like the most. You may decide that it’s more beneficial for you to attend a handful of meetings during your early stages of recovery. Regardless of which meeting you decide to attend, you should take the time to attend a meeting a week at a minimum.

A better understanding of addiction as a disease

Many people mistakenly believe that addiction is a choice, including those that struggle with the condition. Attending NA meetings will help you to develop a comprehensive understanding of how cunning this disease is and how it can impact your life.
