What is Female-Specific Treatment?
Female-specific treatment is a specialized type of addiction care.
Since women are more likely than men to face certain barriers and complications, receiving treatment with other women often increases participants’ comfort levels.
Gender-specific treatment can help address the different ways that substance abuse disorders affect different demographics.
A sense of comradery and mutual understanding can make it easier to be open and honest.
This sense of community can help you make the most of your treatment.
Benefits of Female-Specific Treatment
Women are more likely to face multiple barriers to accessing substance abuse treatment and less likely to seek treatment.
Female-specific treatments aim to ease the gap and improve addiction treatment outcomes for women.
This highly specific and hyper-focused type of addiction care program focuses solely on the unique problems that women face.
Additionally, women may feel more comfortable speaking openly about certain concerns in front of other women.
Events like past traumas, pregnancies, relationship complications, and workplace concerns may be easier to address in a room that is full of women who have had similar experiences.
Substance Abuse Risk Factors for Women
While men tend to drink more alcohol than women do, alcoholism rates are rising among women. Biology, social pressures, and higher rates of mood disorders are all substance abuse risk factors for women. Statistically, men may drink or abuse drugs more than women do.
When women develop substance abuse problems, they tend to develop them faster than men do. Often, control is lost more quickly for women than for men. There is also a shorter interval between developing a substance abuse or alcohol disorder and the onset of negative consequences.
These negative consequences include things like physical issues, interpersonal problems, personality changes, poor impulse control, and trouble maintaining roles and responsibilities. In line with these changes, women tend to experience more severe health-related consequences than men do.
Further, full-time careers, simultaneous familial obligations, financial challenges, and social commitments can all contribute to stress and anxiety levels in women. And higher levels of anxiety and stress are commonly linked to substance abuse rates. There are many unique risk factors that women face. Female-specific treatment helps address these risk factors and complications in a comfortable and safe environment alongside other women.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Certain mental health disorders tend to occur more frequently and severely among women. Women are more likely to experience depression than men are. Anxiety disorders also tend to occur at higher rates among women. These disorders may prevent women from looking for help with their substance abuse disorders. It may feel overwhelming or perceived stigmas may deter you from getting the care you need and deserve. It is not uncommon to experience a substance abuse disorder alongside a mental health disorder. In fact, they often occur together.
This is called a dual diagnosis, and it is a combination that may be addressed in your female-specific treatment program, as well. You may find yourself reaching for a drink to cope with symptoms of your anxiety disorder or depression. Or you may find that your drinking or drug use has led to mental health impairments like these. In either order, it is critical to treat both conditions simultaneously. There is a wide variety of alcohol-related mental and physical health risks. The same is true for illicit and prescription drugs. Over time, these problems will not go away on their own, they will only become worse.
Female-Specific Treatment Options
At Resurgence Behavioral Health, we understand the importance of customized treatment plans. One-size-fits-all solutions are ineffective. Each client we meet is different. Each addiction we treat is different, too. We will build your female-specific treatment plan according to your unique addiction and needs. We will work closely with you to choose the right care settings, methods, recreational activities, and holistic remedies.
We will monitor your progress along the way to ensure that we are giving you the most effective care possible. We provide a variety of addiction treatment options, including:
- Personalized detoxes – some medical to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings
- Inpatient or residential programs
- Partial hospitalization programs or PHPs
- Intensive outpatient programs or IOPs
- Dual diagnosis programs
- Traditional outpatient programs
- Aftercare planning and services
Typical Order of Treatment Programs
Clients with moderate to severe addictions, underlying mental health concerns, a history of relapses, and other complications tend to work through these programs as a sequence. Many clients start with an inpatient or residential program, which often begins with medical detox. This type of program offers the highest levels of support, with 24-hour care and guidance and a personalized detox. Free from distractions and temptations, you can focus on reworking damaging thought patterns and behaviors and working toward sobriety.
Next would be a partial hospitalization program, which is slightly less than full-time, providing high-level care with increased flexibility. The same goes for intensive outpatient programs and traditional outpatient programs. Alumni groups, aftercare planning, and 12-step programs are all available for continued care as well. Not everyone follows this same path. Some clients have demanding careers or familial obligations that prevent them from starting with a full-time stay. Others may have milder addictions or fewer complications and choose to start with a more flexible program. We will help you determine which program will best suit you.
Proven Addiction Treatment Methods
Our conveniently located, safe, and comfortable residential facilities are the ideal place for your recovery journey. Many of our facilities are just minutes from a beach, making it easy to find peace and clarity inside, outside, and a short distance from our centers.
During your program, you will experience a variety of proven addiction treatment methods. These range from traditional methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and support groups to creative methods like art therapy and holistic remedies like yoga and meditation. Various therapy sessions may take place in individual, family, and group settings.
Support groups are also an important part of addiction treatment. And creative, holistic remedies and recreational activities are important for your emotional well-being, as well. Our addiction treatment methods are wide and diverse. They have been carefully selected and developed to give you the most well-rounded care program available. To be effective, an addiction care program should address the needs of both your mind and body. Addressing just one or the other will not do. We will help you achieve the balance you need to make long-term sobriety possible.
Paying for Female-Specific Treatment
Paying for addiction treatments is easier than it has ever been before. If you have health insurance, your program may be partially or fully covered. Most health insurance providers offer addiction care coverage, and we work with most major health insurance providers to get you the care you need and deserve.
If you are not sure what is covered under your plan, please call our addiction counselor at Resurgence Behavioral Health. They will review and verify your insurance coverage at no additional cost. If you do not have health insurance or your coverage falls short, please ask about alternative payment options.
