Kaiser Insurance Coverage for Drug & Alcohol Rehab Treatment

If you’ve been struggling lately with using drugs and alcohol, you aren’t alone. Over 20 million Americans live with a substance use disorder, also called addiction. There is hope for your recovery at Resurgence Behavioral Health; we accept many kinds of health insurance, including Kaiser Insurance. Keep reading to find out how insurance works with rehab and what your healthcare plan covers.

What Is Kaiser Insurance & How Does It Work?

Kaiser Permanente Insurance is an integrated healthcare delivery system comprising three distinct but interdependent entities: the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and its regional operating subsidiaries; Kaiser Foundation Hospitals; and the regional Permanente Medical Groups. Kaiser Permanente operates 39 hospitals and more than 700 medical offices, with over 300,000 personnel, including over 87,000 physicians and nurses. The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations in the United States.

Health Insurance companies contract with service providers like doctors, hospitals, labs, and pharmacies to provide service at an agreed-upon pay rate. These providers are referred to as “in-network.”. Providers not under contract are called “out network” and can charge you whatever they wish. Although your health insurance may cover the cost of an out-network provider, they will only pay what they deem the service is worth, leaving you to pay the balance.

Rehab Facilities That May Accept Kaiser

Fortunately, Resurgence Behavioral Health accepts Kaiser as a key out-network provider. That eliminates the red tape you have to sort through to access care. We are experienced in dealing with health insurance companies and will gladly help you with the administrative process of attending rehab. Call us at 1-855-458-0050 to verify your insurance in a few minutes.

Does Kaiser Insurance Cover Rehab Treatment?

Kaiser Insurance is required to cover the cost of rehab under the Affordable Care Act. Read more about the laws that govern addiction and other mental health disorders in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity, Act of 2008 states, “The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurance groups offering coverage for mental health or substance use disorders to make these benefits comparable to general medical coverage. Deductibles, copays, out-of-pocket maximums, treatment limitations, etc., for mental health or substance use disorders, must be no more restrictive than the same requirements or benefits offered for other medical care.”

What Does Kaiser Insurance Cover?

Kaiser covers many treatments associated with mental health disorders, including addiction. Substance use disorder treatments that Kaiser may cover include

Sometimes insurance companies will require a doctor’s note stating that you need rehab services; this is called a letter of medical necessity. Your primary care physician will generally be the person who writes the letter to send to your insurance company.

Does Kaiser Insurance Cover Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment?

Several laws in the last 20 years have compelled health insurance companies to pay for treating mental health disorders. Many who are combating addiction also live with a mental health disorder; over 9 million people have both mental and substance use disorders. These illnesses include PTSD, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. In addiction treatment, these are called co-occurring disorders, and both diseases must be treated simultaneously for rehab to succeed.

Does Kaiser Insurance Cover Inpatient Rehab?

Kaiser Insurance will pay for the cost of inpatient rehab. Inpatient rehab is the most costly program due to the need to stay at our facility overnight. Inpatient rehab is the preferred program for those with severe addiction symptoms, who have been using drugs or alcohol for a long time, or for health reasons that would be unsafe if not under medical supervision.

Does Kaiser Insurance Cover Intensive Outpatient Rehab?

Kaiser Insurance will cover the cost of an intensive outpatient plan (IOP) for those experiencing mild symptoms of addiction. Expect to spend 20 hours in therapy each week. An IOP is scheduled around your work or family obligations, allowing you to continue school, work, or care for your children.

Does Kaiser Insurance Cover Partial Hospitalization?

Kaiser Insurance will also cover a partial hospitalization program (PHP). A PHP is a good choice for those transitioning from an in-patient stay back into society. You’ll attend therapy at the facility during the day and return home or to a sober living house at night. You can expect at least 20 hours of treatment a week on a PHP.

How Long Will Kaiser Insurance Cover Rehab?

Resurgence will work with your insurance company to find the program that meets your needs. Rehab programs are completed in 30-day increments. If your treatment team deems it critical to your recovery, your stay could be up to 90 days which Kaiser should cover. Most people need at least three months of treatment to recover from a substance use disorder.

What are the Options if Kaiser Insurance Does Not Cover the Cost of Rehab?

If Kaiser Insurance refuses to pay for your treatment, you have a few options. You can file an external appeal with the government. You may have to contact the department in your state responsible for insurance compliance. Drug use is hard on the body, so it is essential that you receive treatment as soon as possible. Contact the rehab facility you wish to attend; many offer payment plans or have private financing available. You are worth the treatment cost and precious to your loved ones. If you have to finance treatment, reducing your risk of death via overdose or poisoning is still worth it.
