Understanding Synthetic Opioids

The naturally occurring opium poppy plant has a number of powerful medicinal properties, most notably its ability to relieve pain.

Recognizing this, humans have since tried to create in labs substances with similar properties – otherwise known as synthetic opioids.

These substances are now legally prescribed daily to help a variety of ailments.

And while these lab-produced substances may provide much-needed pain relief when prescribed, their abuse of them and illegal sale are dangerous and skyrocketing.

Learn more about synthetic opioids and how we treat synthetic opioid abuse and addiction at Resurgence.

The Effects of Synthetic Opioids

One of the most commonly known synthetic opioids is fentanyl. Fentanyl, like its synthetic opioid counterparts, is extremely powerful.

In fact, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA, “Many of these illicitly produced synthetic opioids are more potent than morphine and heroin and thus have the potential to result in a fatal overdose.” And it’s this morphine-like effect that makes these synthetic substances effective medicinal drugs and makes them more likely to cause dependency.

We understand this, which is why we take synthetic opioid addiction very seriously.

Synthetic Opioid Abuse and Overdose

More and more people across the country are either obtaining synthetic opioids or abusing a prescription for the “heroin-like” effects. This “high,” however, also comes with the many negative side effects of synthetic opioid abuse.

And the accompanying statistics are staggering. According to the Center for Disease Control, or CDC, “In 2018, more than 31,000 deaths involving synthetic opioids (other than methadone) occurred in the United States, which is more deaths than from any other type of opioid.”

And while overdose and, subsequently death, is the most notable and unfortunate side effects of synthetic opioid abuse, they are not the only ones. Especially as a prescription drug, it’s important to recognize the signs of abuse in either yourself or a loved one.

Additional Side Effects of Synthetic Opioid Abuse

While the desired effect of synthetic opioids when used legally is primarily pain relief, the effects intensify and worsen when abusing. The world of synthetic opioids is quite vast.

Depending on the type of synthetic opioid abused, how you are abusing and the frequency, your or a loved one’s side effects could vary widely. However, some common side effects, other than overdose, of synthetic opioid abuse that we have noted during treatment include:

-Breathing problems

-Fatigue

-Nausea

-Constipation

-Confusion

If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact us as they may signal synthetic opioid abuse or addiction. Our staff is well-versed in determining signs of synthetic opioid abuse as well as designing personalized treatment plans.

Synthetic Opioids and Mental Illness

As with many other addictive substances, the abuse of synthetic opioids has proven to both trigger and bring on various mental health issues. These include everything from anxiety to depression.

But unlike the abuse of other substances, the abuse of synthetic opioids can be accompanied by a unique mental illness – opioid use disorder. Opioid use disorder is best understood as a physical and psychological reliance on opioids.

Further, according to the American Psychiatric Association, “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition describes opioid use disorder as a problematic pattern of opioid use leading to problems or distress.”

Along with a number of side effects, opioid use disorder is chronic and may also cause disability, relapses, or death. If you notice the problematic use of synthetic opioids in you or a loved one accompanied by personal problems, contact us about opioid use disorder.
