Alcohol & Drug Rehab & Detox In California
California is home to endless sunshine and beaches. From San Francisco to Los Angeles to San Diego, each city unique in its own way, make California a very diverse and vibrant state.
Nonetheless, California has a significantly high substance abuse users, greater than the national average, 9% and 8% respectively. This, along with the high number of rehabilitation centers available, reflects the severity and prevalence of substance abuse issues across California.
Addiction Problems
For some, the addictions begin with teenage experimentation. They dabble in drugs or alcohol as part of a pattern of teenage curiosity or rebellion, and in time, they find they can no longer control when they use drugs or how much they take when they do take in drugs.
For others, addictions begin due to workplace pressures. They lean on substances to help them cope with their jobs and the struggles they must deal with every day. In time, the drugs become a critical part of life that they have no control over.
No matter how your addiction began, there are treatments available that can help you get control once more. Many of the treatments you need are available right here in Irvine. There are public funded or charitable programs nearby that can help you get care even if you can’t pay for it, and there are private-pay options that can help you get control too.

Understanding California
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), over 947,000 people over the age of 12 were dependent on or abused illicit drugs by 2013. Of which and not taking into account for alcohol and prescription drugs, 3.1% struggled with substance abuse. The number has only continued to increase since, so has the growing concern of the state of California. As a result, there is a growing number of rehabilitation centers, raising awareness about the risks behind substance abuse.
Brain cells become accustomed to the presence of drugs, and the cells stop responding to low amounts of the drug. In order to feel the sensations commonly associated with drugs, people must take larger amounts of the drugs they crave. Chasing that high can mean sedating the body to such a degree that breathing stops, and death can follow.
Getting treatment can help, but for some, it’s difficult to recognize addiction or research treatment programs. For some people, the only treatment they receive is in the corrections system.
Addiction treatments do not have to be voluntary in order to work. A treatment program that helps people to recognize how the addiction began and that offers tools people can use to deal with cravings can help people to get better, whether they want that treatment or not. Even programs given in prison can help. But changes to California’s prison system make getting that care even harder.
According to research done for the Desert Sun, Proposition 47 scaled back mandatory convictions and long prison sentences for drug addiction. In theory, the legislation was designed to offer comprehensive addiction treatment for those who needed it, but that treatment hasn’t materialized. That could result in many people in Irvine with an addiction, a criminal record, and no treatment options available.
How the Community Is Working Together
To counter the substance abuse issue, many rehabilitation centers are opening up in California, specifically in Orange County. These rehabilitation centers and clinics aim to promote sober living in the city and to reduce the prevailing percentage of substance abuse users in Orange County, California.
The Orange County Collaborative on Prescription Drug Abuse is working to help reduce the amount of prescription medications available to those who want to abuse them. The organization educates hospitals, doctors, and other health care providers about safe prescribing practices, and they inform people in the community about how to dispose of drugs safely.
With a program like this in place, it could be harder for someone with an addiction to both find and access substances to abuse. They would not be able to sort through a medicine cabinet of a friend or neighbor and find drugs to score. They also wouldn’t be able to jump from doctor to doctor in order to get a prescription for the drugs they crave. The supply could be locked down, and that could lead to higher recovery rates.
