Why Go to a Medical Alcohol Detox Program

Alcohol addiction is a powerful disease that impacts your whole body and person as it takes over your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. The withdrawal symptoms that patients will experience will often target all areas of your health and wellbeing and, in many cases, produce significantly unpleasant or uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can be hard to manage on your own. In fact, there are some alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can pose a significant risk to your health and, in some cases, could become life-threatening. Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms can vary from the following:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hand and body tremors
  • Visual, auditory, or tactile hallucinations
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Aspiration pneumonia
  • Kidney or liver dysfunction

For many, you will not know how your body will react to alcohol withdrawal and what symptoms you may experience. Allowing yourself to have the comfort and security of knowing that you will have access to medical professionals that can provide varying levels of care that are highly trained and qualified to assist you in safely removing the toxins of alcohol and chemical dependency from your body without experiencing significant or severe side effects. A medically supervised detox means that you will be closely monitored while you move through your alcohol detox process as you reside within our residential treatment center and as your symptoms arise or change, you will be assessed and treated by onsite nurses and physicians that will provide you with medical interventions and treatments including behavioral therapy, dual diagnosis treatment, holistic treatment practices, and medication-assisted treatment.

Medications Used In Alcohol Detox

Depending on the severity of your alcohol addiction, you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms that should be treated within a medication-assisted treatment program. These medications offered will be carefully provided by doctors who will be monitoring your progress as you move through your alcohol withdrawal symptoms. As your symptoms begin to subside and you are experiencing fewer cravings, the number of medications you will be prescribed will begin to lessen. The use of medications is to help you move through your detox safely without creating a dependency on the medications provided.

Medications used within an alcohol detox are:

Naltrexone

This medication blocks the opioid receptors in the brain that are responsible for producing the rewarding effects of alcohol acting as a deterrent and method of relapse prevention due to individuals being unable to feel the desired effect of alcohol that they are looking for. Naltrexone also helps to reduce severe alcohol cravings helping you keep focused on your goals of reaching addiction recovery.

Acamprosate

This medication helps to treat specific symptoms of alcohol withdrawal including anxiety, dysphoria, restlessness, and anxiety

Disulfiram

This medication is a method of relapse prevention as it creates significant unpleasant symptoms if you were to consume alcohol while taking this medication including nausea, flushing, and heart palpitations.

Detoxing At Home: Is It Safe?

Often when patients are ready to begin addressing their alcohol addiction, one of the most common questions is if you can detox from alcohol at home and if it poses a risk to your safety. While we understand the desire to want to be within the comfort of your home environment, it is always highly recommended that you complete your detox within an inpatient rehab within a medically supervised detox program. Not only will you be provided with medical support to safely remove alcohol from your body, but you will also be provided with the comfort of home with access to holistic therapies, behavioral therapy, support to address any co-occurring disorders within a dual diagnosis treatment program, amenities within the recovery center, and onsite staff 24/7. Resurgence Behavioral Health is dedicated to ensuring that your stay within your alcohol detox and alcohol rehab program is comfortable, accommodating, and safe.

How Long is Alcohol Detox?

Just as your drug or alcohol addiction is unique to you, your length in detox will be dependent on your personal history of alcohol use. If you are a heavy drinker that has been engaging in alcohol abuse for a prolonged period of time, your length of time in alcohol and drug detox will be longer than someone who has recently begun to engage in alcohol abuse.

Most patients will begin to experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms within 8-10 hours of their last drink. Typically alcohol detox can be broken up into 2 phases. The first phase is acute withdrawal which lasts for days to weeks depending on the severity of your alcohol abuse. During this phase, patients will experience severe withdrawal symptoms. The second phase is early abstinence which occurs over a period of several months. During this time, your brain will begin to restructure its functioning again and begin to regulate its processing again.

While you know you are ready to address your alcohol addiction within an alcohol detox and rehab program, it is common for patients to have concerns about the financial cost associated with alcohol detox.
