Signs of Alcoholism

Signs that you may be addicted to alcohol include:

  • Drinking alone, drinking in secret, hiding alcohol around the house, on your person or at work
  • Feeling guilty about drinking
  • Feeling the need to drink just to feel normal
  • Having uncontrollable mood swings
  • Continuing to drink even when it causes health problems, relationship problems and money problems
  • Craving alcohol or having withdrawal symptoms when you do not drink
  • Being unable to stop drinking on your own

If these signs sound familiar, it may be time to speak with an addiction professional. They can help you figure out what your next step should be.

What Causes Alcoholism?

Reasons people begin drinking may include exposure to trauma, social situations or pressure, a normalization of drinking in the environment you grew up in, and biological reasons. If you are exposed to these factors at certain developmental stages in your life your risk factor for developing a dependence increases.

People who have a co-occurring mental illness like mood disorders, PTSD, ADHD, personality disorders, depression or anxiety may begin self-medicating with alcohol to try and cope with symptoms but end up addicted.

Physical addiction happens as your body becomes accustomed to having alcohol in your system. It will produce uncomfortable or even dangerous withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop drinking, and therefore a medical detox is strongly recommended. Through our integrated treatments at Resurgence, we can help you overcome your physical and psychological dependence on alcohol.
