The Shocking Truth About Overdose Rates in Minority Communities

The Shocking Truth About Overdose Rates in Minority Communities

Drug Overdose Rates Are Rising for Minority Communities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently came out with startling information regarding the rates of overdose in the indigenous and black communities. In roughly 25 states, there has been an increase in deaths involving those in the black and American Indian communities by approximately 44%. This overdose mortality rate is shocking and has left many people wondering why this racial and ethnic discrepancy is taking place.

Disparities By Age and Income

One of the details of this report regarding disparities in opioid use and abuse revolved around the fact that those black people and American Indians who were younger and had a lower income level were more likely to fall into the trap of opioid use disorder. However, there was also a noticeable raise in drug abuse among black people, particularly males, above the age of 65. Unfortunately, there was no evidence that those that passed away as a result of their opioid use disorder reached out for help in the form of addiction treatment.
