What is Meth?

Meth is a term used for “methamphetamine.” This drug is an affordable street drug that is highly addictive and dangerous. In fact, it is one of the most addictive drugs in the world. Meth is made by clandestine labs where the drug is “cooked.” These labs are located in nice neighborhoods, rural areas, empty warehouses, and even in RVs! Meth is known by their street names Ice, Crystal, or Crank.

It is made from acetone, fertilizer, ether, decongestants, lithium, hydrochloric acid, anhydrous ammonia, and iodine. Those cooking meth often lace other extremely dangerous drugs such as fentanyl in it. When you buy meth from a dealer, we have no way of knowing what is in the drug.

Using it puts you in grave danger. Methamphetamines are stimulants that alter brain function. A surge of energy is a characteristic side effect. Meth comes in powder form and can range in color (white, ivory, orange, pink.) It has a rather unpleasant odor because of the chemicals used to make it. It also comes in crystal form that is pink or bluish-green.

Signs of Meth Abuse

There are numerous devices, tools, and makeshift objects that we, as users, are inventing. Those who do not recognize such things are less likely to be aware of a loved one smoking meth.

Drug-related Items Include:

  • Hollow ink pens
  • Rolled up paper or money
  • Foil squares
  • Glass pipes or bongs
  • Steel wool
  • Plastic bottles that have been altered
  • Light bulbs that have been altered
  • Spoons that have burn marks
  • Finding a lighter out of place
  • Vaping devices
  • Dab rigs

  • A sudden surge of energy
  • Uncontrollable movements
  • Bruxism (grinding teeth)
  • Pupils are dilated
  • Chills
  • Altered moods
  • Anxiety
  • Impaired thinking or confusion
  • Itching and scratching
  • Lack of appetite

Long-Term Side Effects

  • Permanent impairment of brain function
  • Loss of memory
  • Violent outbursts
  • Risky behaviors
  • Rotting of teeth or gums
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Weight loss

Mental Illness and Meth Use

We seek out the euphoric and energizing highs from smoking meth, but we fail to think about how it affects any mental disorders we may have. Meth causes depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and so many more disorders to become worse. The more meth you use, the worse your depression, anxiety, and manias grow.

Because you feel worse, you use more meth to feel better. Before you realize it, you are in the grips of a hamster wheel that never stops turning. Meth addiction causes psychosis, so for those who did not have a mental illness before using it, you will now because of smoking meth.
