With smartphone apps and technology reaching every corner of the world, it makes sense that the addiction market would attempt to digitize.
There are multiple apps now on the market, looking to create programs for the digital market.
With multiple apps already available, it is important to understand what makes them different and how they can help.
Prescription-only apps can enhance treatment, reduce the chance for relapse, and help anyone truly struggling with addiction.
What is a Prescription-Only App?
With the invention of prescription-only apps such as the “reSET-O mobile medical application”, addiction treatment has changed.
The prescription-only Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy apps are used along with medical supervision and should be used with outpatient treatment.
These apps are essentially the first time that Big Pharma has created and sold a piece of software.
The trial results showed that patients working with the program were two times more likely to avoid using alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana than those who did not use this app.
The Food and Drug Administration approved these apps in 2018.
Now it is considered to be leading digital therapeutics.
How Does the Prescription-Only App Work?
Each week you will answer questions regarding your recovery and addiction. These questions can help you cope with triggers and cravings. It can also give you information about recovery and how to deal with your addiction.
In the app, you can report your cravings, what triggers you are feeling, and the setbacks you might be experiencing. All of the data will be sent to your therapist. They should also communicate with you to ensure that you have a proper physician-patient relationship. This will allow you to have an outside perspective to make sure you understand what you need to plan for the remainder of the week.
There are different activities in the app based on CBT. These apps are designed to mimic what you might experience in a typical face-to-face drug counseling session.
Can Prescription-Only Apps Be Used for Opioid Addiction?
The prescription-only apps are not FDA-approved for people with opioid addictions or anyone taking opioid replacement therapy. Unfortunately, this is because the clinical trial never showed benefits for those with opioid use disorders. An app for people with opioid addiction is currently in the developmental stage.
These apps will consist of four different sections, with each section using different types of neuro-behavioral intervention. There will be 67 modules in total, consisting of video, audio, and text. These will teach you how to avoid substance use, manage your thoughts, crave, refuse substances, manage your mood, communication, and interpersonal relationship problems. After completion, you will receive incentives to continue using the program.
What Makes the App Different from Other Treatments?
These apps use engaging content and incentive program, which sets these apps apart from other addiction treatment programs. You will receive badges, digital gift cards, and other things of nominal financial value. Incentivizing with items of little value is used so they cannot be exchanged for drugs.
Does the App Really Work?
Although there has been proven success with these apps, there is some skepticism as well. The first is that it can limit access for those who are not able to access a prescription. Unfortunately, they are only available as a by-prescription-only model. Addiction needs to be taken seriously, and requiring a prescription shows that.
Why Use Prescription-Only Apps?
Addiction recovery apps have become extremely important when it comes to aftercare routines and 12-step programs. There are many reasons why you should use a prescription-only app in recovery, such as:
- Triggers are everywhere. Typically, you always have your phone with you, so they can help to prevent relapse.
- Apps are accessible since almost everyone has a smartphone.
- Provides a discreet and anonymous tool to help people in recovery.
- Addiction specialists create most apps. They provide extensive knowledge about addiction recovery that you otherwise would not have access to.
The Controversy of Prescription-Only Apps
The prescription-only app is designed to be used with a prescription because two people should only use it; the addict and their physician.
Despite their success, the concept of the prescription-only app is not welcomed by everyone. Some researchers feel that prescription-only apps might limit access for the greater public. The purpose of the prescription-only model is to ensure that people understand that substance use disorders are serious medical conditions. Trained clinicians should only monitor them, and these apps help to facilitate that.
Mental Illness and Substance Abuse
Dual diagnosis occurs when you suffer from a substance use disorder at the same time as a mental illness. Half of all people with substance use disorder also struggle with a mental illness at some point in their lives. The same is true for those with mental illness. Those who struggle with mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety, are twice as likely to suffer from a substance use disorder.
