What is Bupropion?

what is bupropion?

Bupropion is an antidepressant medication that is commonly used to treat mental health disorders including major depressive disorders, and seasonal affective disorders, and to support individuals in quitting smoking as a smoking cessation agent.  Bupropion is also known under the brand names Wellbutrin or Zyban. Bupropion comes in tablet or pill forms ranging in dosage size depending on your specific needs and your doctor’s recommendation for a prescription.

Just Works

Individualized treatment programs delivered in a comfortable, relaxed setting promote healing in your recovery journey.

Bupropion Effects

Taking bupropion will work for the treatment of mood disorders including major depressive disorder by inhibiting the uptake of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are responsible for your moods and the use of bupropion will help to balance the neurotransmitters to regulate your emotions and responses. If you are taking bupropion for smoking cessation, it will work within your brain to help alleviate or reduce your nicotine cravings allowing you to stay focused on your goal of quitting smoking.

Signs of Bupropion Abuse and Addiction

Bupropion addiction is not common, however, it is possible. Individuals that have a history of prescription drug abuse and cocaine addiction will have an increased risk of developing a bupropion addiction. For cocaine users, bupropion is a cheaper option than cocaine and will provide a sense of euphoria and impairment that individuals are looking for.

There are some common signs and symptoms that will indicate that a person is living with a bupropion addiction including:

  • Appetite loss
  • Euphoria
  • A dramatic increase in self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Euphoria
  • Increased energy
  • Staying awake for long periods of time
  • Experiencing difficulty sleeping
  • Over excitement or excessive happiness
  • Going to multiple doctors to receive prescriptions for bupropion

Bupropion Withdrawal Symptoms

Bupropion does not have a tendency to produce severe withdrawal symptoms, unlike other antidepressant medications due to a decreased level of serotonin being impacted by bupropion. When you are abusing bupropion and attempt to quit your use of prescription drugs abruptly, it can cause an individual to feel withdrawal symptoms when your body begins to restore functioning without the use of bupropion. Common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Irritability
  • Increased levels of agitation
  • Hostility
  • Aggressive or violent behavior
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

Long-Term Side Effects of Bupropion Abuse

When you engage in bupropion abuse for an extended period of time, there is an increased risk of developing long-term side effects that can impact your physical and mental health functioning. Common long-term side effects of bupropion can include the following symptoms :

  • Hypertension (severe high blood pressure)
  • Angle-closure glaucoma- The opening of the iris becomes angled causing fluid pressure to build up within the eye. This can lead to permanent vision loss or damage
  • Liver problems
  • Suicidal or homicidal thoughts
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • The onset of psychosis, hallucinations, manic behaviors, or panic attacks
