Aftercare plan after substance abuse treatment is the continued care after rehab.

There are many components to an aftercare plan for substance abuse.

Ongoing aftercare helps you overcome the triggers, stress, and cravings after treatment.

Addiction is an incurable brain disorder.

Relapse is always a possibility.

Preventative care is an important part of an aftercare plan for substance abuse.

When transitioning from rehab, an aftercare plan after substance abuse treatment is essential.

Aftercare plans help you face the difficulties you will encounter after rehab.

Preventing Relapse with an Aftercare Plan

The foundation of all addiction treatment is the promotion of long-term recovery.

This is accomplished with careful planning.

Many aftercare plans for substance abuse share similar components.

Yet no two plans are alike, individuals’ needs are different.

For example, some people are spiritual and will have elements that honor their faith.

All aftercare plans for substance abuse include how to identify triggers.

When you can identify your triggers, you can then plan how to react and cope.

Is Addiction Treatment Effective?

Rehab treatment can be a peaceful time. Being sober is after years of living in addiction is comfort. Learning new things about yourself, and taking part in group therapy is rewarding. When inside, you have access to 24/7 support. Recovery is about rediscovering and loving your sober self.

When treatment comes to an end, some are fearful. This is because they worry about integrating back into the community. For everyone else, the world has remained the same. For a recovering addict, everything is different. Many addicts have difficulty moving forward. Especially when so much of their history is rooted in addiction. Over half of the people who complete addiction treatment, relapse in the first year. This doesn’t mean treatment was a failure, but that treatment should be restarted, modified, or more aftercare options are needed.

Creating an After Care Plan for Substance Abuse

The most common aftercare plans for substance abuse include meetings, outpatient care, counseling, and sober living. When treatment gets closer to the end, you will need to develop an aftercare plan. An aftercare plan for substance abuse is tailored to your needs.

It will reflect on how you responded to treatment and tailored to reflect your progress. Creating an after-care plan requires you to identify areas in your life that may cause a relapse. Being aware of your limitations can help you face your problems to prevent relapses.

Sober Living

Craving and urges to use are hard enough to control. Living alongside drug and alcohol use can make recovery impossible. An important feature of an after-care plan for substance abuse will include your living arrangements. Many people are unable to secure a safe and supportive environment after treatment.

Sober living is an option if you are worried about stable housing after substance abuse treatment. A safe and supportive environment is essential for continued recovery. The goal of these homes is to allow you to build trust among the community and find the resources needed to live.

Outpatient Care

Once Detox and inpatient care are complete often continued care is necessary to protect your recovery. Outpatient care provides you with many of the same benefits of inpatient care, but with more freedom to make personal choices. In outpatient care, you attend therapies for half the day then return home. Two programs are helpful in aftercare plans for substance abuse.

  • Partial hospitalization program or PHP: This aftercare plan provides you with services up to 20 per week. It may include, individual and group therapy, medical services, and medically supervised withdrawal. Partial hospitalizations are also helpful to stabilize someone after a relapse.
  • Intensive outpatient program or IOP: The major difference between these programs is the amount of time a person spends in the program. An Intensive outpatient program can last from weeks to several months.

Alumni Programs

Alumni programs are for addicts who successfully recovered, but still face difficulties in their life. Relapse is most common when there is no support. Alumni programs are resources that help recovering addicts’ transition back into everyday life. The goal of these programs is to help connect people who understand the difficulties in recovery.

Aftercare for substance abuse with alumni programs introduces you to fellow addicts. It’s a safe space to honestly express your struggles and experiences. Others in response offer encouragement and supportive advice. Events sponsored through Alumni programs provide exciting activities that make life enjoyable without being high.

There are no time frames for alumni programs, it just requires your participation. Enthusiastically participating in alumni activities at Resurgence Behavioral Health can help strengthen your sobriety and prevent relapses.

Substance Abuse Support Groups

Recovery groups don’t’ cost anything. Most support groups are informal. They are composed of other addicts and family members looking for support. There are many types of meeting for substance abuse. Attending meetings provide opportunities to meet other recovering addicts. Building a network of sober people is important in developing a good aftercare plan for substance abuse.

Meetings stress the importance of personal responsibility for your recovery. It’s a place where you can share experiences, and provide services for another. A belief in a higher power is common in 12 step meetings.

Sponsors are another part of the meetings. Sponsors are people with years of sobriety under their belt that offer one on one help for newly sober individuals.

Individual Counseling

Once you begin to live life sober, it doesn’t make the consequences or trauma from addiction go away. A hard part of transitioning back into routine life is coping with stress.

Substance abuse was an effective way to make the problems go away for short periods of time. But, learning to navigate life without drugs is complicated if you have a dual diagnosis. A dual diagnosis happens very often in addiction treatment.

Having a co-occurring mental health diagnosis can complicate treatment. It doesn’t mean that recovery is impossible. It only means you must treat the underlying factors that can affect your recovery.

The Life Beyond After Care for Substance Abuse

The length of your aftercare plan for substance abuse is based on your unique circumstances. Many people discover they require weeks or months of closely monitored aftercare. Effective recovery encourages people to stay active in aftercare for at least 1 year. As you grow more confident and skilled your aftercare plan will reflect your progress in high-risk situations.

Just because you finish your after-care plan it doesn’t mean your recovery is complete. Addiction is a lifelong illness. Every day will get easier. Although you will still need to constantly check your progress. Reassessing your goals and modifying your aftercare plan is key.

Essential to long-term recovery is mindful living. Everything you have experienced and learned has a major impact on your recovery. Be an active participant in your after-care plan for substance abuse. It will better equip you in the future to prevent relapses.
