Symptoms of Cocaine Withdrawal

Cocaine addiction came on the rise in the 1980s and since then the use of cocaine has become more and more popular among Americans across the nation with this powerful drug addiction impacting the lives of 5.2 million Americans each year. While many start out their use of cocaine as a method to let loose at a party, escape from the day-to-day stressors of life, or as a method of socializing with peers, the once recreational use of cocaine can quickly turn into a destructive cycle of addiction. Cocaine produces a fast-acting high that is often short-lived within a 15-20 minute time frame. As individuals feel the instant rush and euphoric feeling from cocaine, as soon as the high begins to dissipate the stronger the urge becomes to use it again to attempt to reach the same desired effect. This creates a vicious cycle of drug addiction quickly causing significant disruptions and challenges to your physical, emotional, mental, and social health.

Just Works

Individualized treatment programs delivered in a comfortable, relaxed setting promote healing in your recovery journey.

The longer that you engage in cocaine abuse, the more you develop a physical and psychological addiction to the substance. Your body and psychological mindset become reliant on this powerful drug to function throughout the day. Once you attempt to end your use of cocaine, you will begin to feel an onset of physical or psychological side effects as your body attempts to adjust to functioning without the harmful toxins of cocaine. Common cocaine withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Restlessness
  • Slowed thought processes and thinking patterns
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Experiencing slowed physical functioning or extreme fatigue after completing an activity.
  • Severe exhaustion or fatigue
  • Suicidal thoughts, ideations, or actions
  • Anhedonia otherwise known as an inability to feel pleasure
  • Difficulty experiencing sexual arousal
  • Chills
  • Tremors
  • Nerve pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Vivid, and often unpleasant, dreams or nightmares
  • Severe cravings for cocaine
  • Increased appetite

To best support Los Angeles residents in overcoming their cocaine addiction, it is important that you enter into a cocaine detox and rehab program. This will provide patients with the support to overcome the physical addiction to cocaine while beginning to gain perspective on what has been fuelling their drug addiction all along. Addiction occurs for a number of reasons often stemming from a past of emotional turmoil and traumas that have impacted how you respond to negative situations or stimuli. A cocaine rehab program will provide patients with the opportunity to heal from their past while gaining the skills needed for relapse prevention and maintaining a healthy life in sober living.

Is Cocaine Detox Necessary?

While cocaine detox may not pose a significant threat to your physical safety and wellbeing compared to other substances such as heroin or alcohol, there are options to complete a cocaine detox within an outpatient treatment basis, there are some that may still need to address your cocaine addiction within a medically supervised detox program. This is especially true for those patients that have had the prior experience of attempting to detox on their own and encountering relapse behaviors. An inpatient drug detox provides patients with the added support of ongoing supervision throughout their detox. It is common for patients to be living with an active cocaine addiction along with an occurring disorder of either a mental health disorder or behavioral condition. Patients will have the opportunity to engage in a dual diagnosis treatment program that supports stabilizing their co-occurring disorder through holistic, natural approaches that eliminate the need for cocaine as a method of self-medication.

How Does Cocaine Detox Work?

Once you enter into cocaine detox, you will first meet with an admission specialist who will take the time to get to know you and your history of cocaine abuse through completing admission paperwork and assessments. This information collected will support the team of medical professionals and therapeutic staff to understand the level of care needed while you move through your cocaine detox program. After considering the following risk factors:

  • The length of time you have been using cocaine
  • The amount in which you use cocaine at a given time
  • How often do you engage in drug abuse
  • Any family history of drug addiction
  • If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or co-occurring disorders

Gaining an understanding of your personal circumstances with addiction will allow the team within the cocaine detox to provide you with a whole-person integrated approach to treatment that will utilize the best evidence-based therapy methods that will help you safely remove the toxins of cocaine while you stabilize your psychological health.

Is It Safe To Detox From Cocaine At Home?

While there are options for Los Angeles residents to detox from cocaine within an outpatient drug rehab setting, it is suggested that patients detox from cocaine within a medically supervised detox program. This provides patients with the comfort of knowing that they have access to onsite addiction therapists and medical professionals who are specifically trained in safe, detox practices. Cocaine withdrawal causes psychological symptoms that can pose a threat to a person well being such as suicidal thoughts or actions. As your brain and body adjust to functioning without the use of cocaine, your brain’s ability to produce levels of dopamine that you were getting during your cocaine abuse becomes significantly impacted causing disruptions within your reward circuit in the brain. This creates challenges in a person being able to feel genuinely happy and balanced without the use of drugs causing severe mood swings and inability to regulate emotions leading to an increase in feelings of depression as well as a severe onset of suicidal thoughts or attempts. The expert medical and therapeutic staff within a cocaine detox will provide patients with individual counseling and medical care that will ensure they can keep themselves safe throughout your drug detox program while eliminating the physical and psychological dependence on cocaine.

How Long Will Cocaine Withdrawal Last?

Cocaine withdrawal will typically occur for patients within three different phases, however, each individual has their own unique history with cocaine addiction and there may be times that patients will experience varying levels of symptoms depending on the severity of their cocaine addiction

The three common phases of cocaine withdrawal are:

Phase 1 Known as the “crash phase”

This occurs within hours or days after the last time that you used cocaine. Individuals will often experience severe withdrawal symptoms during this time including depression, anxiety, irritability, and a strong desire to sleep for a long period of time. Individuals will feel symptoms of extreme exhaustion, and fatigue, and will have an increase in appetite. Cravings for cocaine are at a minimum during this phase.

Phase 2: Known as the “craving phase”

This phase occurs within 1-10 weeks after you last used cocaine. Individuals will experience strong or severe cravings for cocaine during this time, often having thoughts of using cocaine all day consistently. As time goes on, your cravings will begin to subside or if you have used infrequently or recreationally, your craving phase may not last the whole 10 weeks. Individuals during this time often show side effects including an inability to concentrate, lethargy, or irritability.

Phase 3: Known as the “extinction phase”

After 10 weeks, patients will begin to see a decrease in the severity of their cocaine withdrawal with individuals only experiencing intermittent or random cravings for cocaine. Often these cravings will be due to environmental or situational triggers. As time goes on and patients experience 30 plus weeks in addiction recovery, your cocaine cravings will become little to none or otherwise “extinct”.

Medications used For Cocaine Detox

Cocaine is a unique substance as unlike other illicit substances there are no FDA-approved medications to support patients in their cocaine detox program. However, there has been research on medications that have proven to support patients in their cocaine detox process including the following:

  • Buprenorphine and naltrexone have begun being tested for effectiveness in alleviating the severity of cocaine withdrawal and have proven to be effective within animal studies
  • Propranolol – This beta-blocker medication has been proven to support patients in stabilizing mood and alleviating side effects of depression, anxiety, and other psychological concerns
