Drug Detox and Withdrawal Explained

Drug detox is the necessary and important first step in anyone’s recovery journey. In order to begin to heal from your addiction through in-depth therapeutic measures, you will need to be of a sound and clear mindset to look within your thoughts and emotional processes. Drug detox is the time where you will be able to clear your body of the harsh, toxic chemicals from the drugs you have taken and begin to restore your body to a healthy state.

Depending on your drug of choice, you will experience different withdrawal symptoms that range in levels of severity. Withdrawals symptoms occur after you have used a substance for an extended period of time and your body becomes unable to function normally without using the substance. Once you stop consuming your drug of choice, your body will have negative reactions as it tries to function without the drug in its system.

What is Withdrawal and Why Does it Happen?

Withdrawal is a process that happens after someone suddenly or abruptly attempts to stop using an addictive substance. Most addictive substances have chemical components that cause your body to become reliant on those substances to be able to function normally. When you stop taking those drugs, especially cold turkey, your body will have negative reactions as it tries to manage functioning without the use of drugs.

Withdrawal symptoms will vary depending on the substance that you are addicted to. While some symptoms may present as minor from certain drugs, there are other substances that will have severe, and in some cases life-threatening, symptoms if you go through the withdrawal process without being under the supervision of a medical professional.

Common Drug Withdrawal Symptoms

The withdrawal symptoms that you will experience will vary depending on your substance of choice and your history of drug use over your lifespan. However, these are some common drug withdrawal symptoms that are seen in our patients.

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Tremors
  • Sweating

  • Irritability
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure

Medical Detox for Drug Addiction

Your detox will be unique to your individual circumstances and history of drug use. This makes it challenging to predict what your withdrawal symptoms will look like. We strongly encourage all of our patients to attend our center for a medical detox where they can be supervised by our team of nurses and physicians. As you experience withdrawal symptoms, you will be monitored by our medical team and appropriate medical interventions will take place. Whether you need additional support from medications that will help to lessen your symptoms or holistic measures of treatment that will have you incorporating a healthy new lifestyle, you will have the highest level of care from our team at Resurgence. Your physical and emotional safety and wellbeing are our main priority while you are in our care.

How Long Does Drug Detox Last?

San Antonio residents often wonder how long they will be in drug detox as they prepare to come for their drug rehab program. The length of your drug detox program will vary depending on your history of substance use. Typically, we see patients beginning to feel mild withdrawal symptoms after 24 hours since they last used drugs. The onset of peak withdrawal symptoms occurs between days 3-6. Commonly, we see patients begin to feel healthier and stronger by day 7 or 8.

Inpatient Drug Rehab for San Antonio Residents

San Antonio residents who are looking for a drug rehab program that will provide them with a safe, secure environment away from outside distractions and triggers will turn into an inpatient drug rehab program. Inpatient drug rehab invites patients to come stay in our residential facility over an extended period of time to focus on therapy and gaining tools for relapse prevention. During an inpatient drug rehab program, you will have access to onsite support staff and counselors 24 hours a day.

Your days in residential drug rehab will incorporate different therapeutic modalities that will bring light to your addictive behaviors and teach you the skills for relapse prevention. You will be invited to participate in individual and group therapy sessions each day to help you gain insight on what has been the driving factors that have impacted your addiction and learn new strategies for managing unpleasant, triggering situations and emotions. Once you are able to identify problematic triggers for yourself, our expert counselors will work with you on developing methods of processing stressors in a healthy way that will avoid you turning to drugs as a means to cope.

Along with talk therapy methods, you will be invited to participate in holistic measures of treatment. Recreating your lifestyle to suit your life of sobriety means changing your daily routine and incorporating new measures for self-care and entertainment. You will learn how to integrate physical activity within your routine through measures of walking, exercise classes, or yoga. A consistent exercise regime will not only improve your physical health but will help you improve mental clarity and improve your sleep patterns. Resurgence offers our inpatient patients opportunities to see how a sober lifestyle can still have fun and enjoyment through the use of our onsite amenities. Our hope is that our patients will engage with each other in various activities together or solely, to gain perspective on fun, new ways to enjoy your downtime that you can take with you even after you complete your drug rehab program. We offer our patients access to an onsite gym where you can access our state-of-the-art machines, exercise classes, and sports facilities. San Antonio residents have enjoyed going horseback riding or swimming in natural hot springs in some of our locations. Patients are invited to participate in games nights or enjoy a movie as a group. We find that a great way to connect with other patients and build lasting relationships is through physical and social activities.

Outpatient Drug Rehab for San Antonio Residents

Other San Antonio residents need flexibility for their rehab programs. We understand that life cannot always be put on pause as you take your recovery journey. Patients have families, jobs, or education that they need to attend to while still making the necessary steps for recovery. Outpatient drug rehab provides patients with flexible options to attend our treatment center either in the morning or afternoon to ensure that they will be able to meet your prior commitments and focus on your recovery goals.

We offer different outpatient drug rehab programs that will be sure to fit into your lifestyle with ease. Some patients opt to participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) where you are able to attend the center throughout the week during the day typically for 25-30 hours a week. You will have access to individual and group therapy sessions where you will gain insight into the root causes of your addiction and learn to reframe your response to negative or triggering thoughts and emotions.

Other patients who have a desire to continue working, attending to their families, or going to school while also working on eliminating their addiction from their life will choose an IOP (intensive outpatient program). An IOP gives patients the freedom to choose when they attend the center for therapy sessions that will fit into their daily routine whether it be day or evening. Through an IOP you will be able to attend individual therapy sessions plus group therapy sessions to help aid in your healing from your drug addiction.

Patients who complete an inpatient program are encouraged to participate in an outpatient treatment program. Often when patients leave inpatient rehab and enter back into their home environment they can produce feelings of anxiety as you begin to incorporate your newfound way of life into your home environment. Giving yourself the added support of counselors and fellow patients as you navigate your life of sobriety outside of treatment will increase your chances of success in sobriety.

Once you complete an IOP or PHP outpatient program, you are invited to participate in our continuing care program. This program will provide you with extended levels of care through aftercare programs and weekly therapeutic sessions where you will have the chance to discuss your transition back into everyday life with therapists and fellow Resurgence alumni. Keeping yourself connected to your treatment goals and plan through a continuing care program will ensure that your newfound life in recovery will remain and be strong.
