Flexible Addiction Treatment: IOP Explained

Heroin Addiction Treatment in Los Angeles: A Full Continuum of Care

Outpatient addiction treatment can often be the longest phase of a person’s detox and rehab care.  While drug and alcohol detox as well as inpatient drug and alcohol rehab are to some extent standard or predictable periods of time, outpatient treatment plans are more flexible.  It’s important for someone receiving alcohol and drug outpatient rehab treatment to feel 100% comfortable dealing with everyday stress and triggers before completing a care plan.  Everyone’s experience in outpatient rehab is different based on many factors.  At Resurgence Behavioral Health we take all of these factors into account when developing an inpatient or outpatient treatment program for one of our clients.

“Flexibility can often be a key when it comes to people taking part in substance abuse treatment programs and trying to deal with drug or alcohol problems on their own. A lot of individuals do not think they can commit to inpatient care and do not realize how many options are available as part of drug detox treatment in Costa Mesa. Outpatient drug treatment options include regular weekly behavioral therapy sessions, family therapy, group therapy, and advanced levels of care like Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP). If you or one of your loved ones is struggling with substance abuse or addiction, please give us a call at Resurgence Behavioral Health.”

What is IOP Addiction Treatment?

IOP addiction treatment is a care plan for people struggling with drugs or alcohol that takes place in an outpatient environment. When someone takes part in any type of outpatient addiction treatment, they do not stay in a drug treatment center 24 hours a day, as they would during residential treatment. This allows people being treated for substance use disorders to still go to work and school and take care of other responsibilities in life. The intensive reference in the IOP title is due to the schedule of behavioral therapy sessions involved in this type of care plan. During an IOP, clients take part in group therapy sessions, individual meetings with addiction treatment counselors, attend life skills classes, and get introduced to aftercare support groups. For those also dealing with medication issues, understanding ‘How Long Does Zoloft Stay In Your System‘ is a vital part of the treatment process.

Drug and alcohol addiction treatment plans that incorporate various types of behavioral therapy sessions have been found to be more effective than those that rely on a single type of care.  That’s why at Resurgence Behavioral Health we make sure that our clients are exposed to various types of addiction therapy.  A customized, comprehensive plan for our clients is a cornerstone of our outpatient treatment program.  An IOP program can be an excellent component in an overall drug or alcohol addiction treatment plan.  Please do not hesitate to call us at any time to find out more about any of our programs.

What Do You Do In IOP Rehab?

An IOP program is a rehab plan for people who need more drug or alcohol addiction therapy than is provided during a typical outpatient care program.  In general, there are two groups of people who are excellent candidates for an IOP program.  First, there are people working on addiction recovery that have taken part in an inpatient therapy program who have completed that level of care.  As part of transitioning to outpatient treatment, they take part in an IOP instead of going directly to more traditional outpatient therapy.  What this entails is more hours of behavioral therapy, more days of the week, with additional training courses, too.

The second group of individuals are those that need the flexibility of an outpatient therapy program but care closer to what they would receive during inpatient treatment.  An IOP program is the perfect compromise within the levels of care offered at Resurgence Behavioral Health for people looking for this transitional type of plan.  In addition to group therapy sessions, individual counseling, life skills classes, and support groups, some of the other courses offered can include trauma education, vocational skills, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, family and community, and self-discovery sessions.  One of our highly trained addiction treatment counselors can review all of the aspects of our IOP program with you whenever you are ready.

How Long Does IOP Last?

An IOP program is a transitional substance abuse treatment plan that is not meant to be an open ended level of care.  Intensive Outpatient Programs usually last eight to 12 weeks.  Each week, the substance abuse treatment patient typically takes part in therapy sessions three to five days.  Additionally, intensive outpatient treatment is conducted from two to five hours a day.  The number of days and hours are discussed and reviewed between drug and alcohol rehab counselors and their patients. The flexibility of intensive outpatient treatment programs make it easy for clients and therapists to adjust when and how long sessions will last based on the needs of the client. IOPs are also a good choice for people with a dual diagnosis, as mental health issues can also be addressed as part of a client’s treatment plan.  Substance abusers who seek treatment all need different specific care attributes in order to have the best chance of successfully entering addiction recovery.  The available components in our outpatient addiction therapy programs can be implemented as needed based on how an individual client is progressing with their treatment.

Benefits of Flexible Addiction Treatment

Flexibility during outpatient addiction treatment helps people with busy schedules get the help they need with drugs and alcohol while still taking care of their school, work, home, and other responsibilities.  This can make the difference between beginning addiction recovery and being stuck with drugs or alcohol negatively affecting your life.  Depending on the availability of specific counselors, intensive outpatient drug or alcohol rehab can occur throughout the day.  Clients can also switch between different types of therapies as they progress through an IOP program.  Outpatient programs, including IOPs and Partial Hospitalization Programs allow clients to live at home, adding to the support they get from loved ones as they make progress in recovery.

Having recovery resources that fit your needs available to you assists with all decisions regarding committing to an inpatient or outpatient program.  It is very hard to go through drug detox, substance abuse rehab, or any other treatment if it does not fit their overall situation in life.  However, when proper therapies, life skills, and relapse prevention plans can be incorporated into a treatment schedule that works for everyone, a client can take the steps they need in order to begin recovery and maintain their sobriety.

Therapies Offered in IOP

There are many different types of addiction therapy offered as part of an IOP program.  Individual therapy sessions, group meetings, family therapy, and introduction to support groups are all part of our program.

Individual Therapy

Each client is assigned a primary therapist as part of their outpatient addiction treatment.  This therapist will conduct individual addiction recovery sessions. Individual drug and alcohol rehab treatment can help with learning how to add to your support network, gaining a better understanding of yourself, learning how to handle emotions, identifying underlying causes of drug and alcohol abuse, providing coping strategies, managing symptoms, and facilitating lifestyle changes.

Group Therapy Sessions

Group therapy is a vital part of treatment for substance use disorders.  There are concepts that are covered more easily in a group setting than in individual therapy. First, you learn you’re not alone. This can be important as both addiction and recovery can make you feel very isolated.  It also helps you feel connected. Going forward, you’ll need to know there are other people out there fighting to stay sober just like you. It can help you improve your communication skills. Being able to properly talk about what is going on with your thoughts and feelings can help a lot with relapse prevention. You also get a broader range of feedback from your fellow group members. You can practice new skills. Coping skills, overall life skills, and relapse prevention skills aer all important parts of recovery  The group lets the therapist see how you interact with others.  This gives your therapist a better look at how you are progressing with your addiction recovery.

Family Therapy

Family therapy during outpatient rehab can allow family members to lend their strength while a person begins their recovery.  It also shows family members how much drugs and alcohol negatively affected their life. Lastly, family members see the dedication and commitment their loved one has for being successful in addiction recovery.
