Pittsburgh Drug Detox Centers

Top Rated Drug Detox Centers for Pittsburgh Residents

Drug addiction is a complex disease that can begin by being exposed to certain triggers at certain developmental stages, social situations or peer pressure, or trying to self-medicate for mental or physical illness.

Some of the indicators that you have a substance abuse problem and may need drug detox support include:

  • Using more than one drug at one time, including mixing them with alcohol
  • Being unable to stop using drugs when you want to or feeling withdrawal symptoms when you stop
  • Involvement with drugs creating problems in relationships, family, friends or work
  • Blacking out from drug use
  • Neglecting family, chores and other responsibilities, or social gatherings in favor of drug use
  • Having medical problems as a result of drug use, like HIV, hepatitis, brain issues like memory loss or overdosing
  • Using prescription drugs in ways that were not intended by the prescribing doctor
  • Legal trouble associated with drugs, committing crimes like theft/robbery, violence, selling drugs or drug possession
  • Doing things you would not normally do so you can get drug money, like sex work, financial exploitation of friends and loved ones, and stealing

What is Drug Detox Like?

When you first enter drug detox you will go through our intake procedures, which include:

A physical health exam – will help us determine your level of addiction, and whether we will need to help you with other physical issues. We will also need to be sure you are healthy enough to endure a detox program at this time as it can be physically taxing.

A mental health screening – will help us to figure out if you need extra help in a dual diagnosis program that will help us get to the root of your addiction while working on your mental health condition at the same time. Mental health issues and addiction usually affect one another on a deep level so this is the most efficient way to get you on the road to recovery.

An in-depth interview – will let us get to know more about you as a person. We want to know what your goals are, what you want to get out of detox and rehab, and if there is anything you are nervous about or need to be explained to you ahead of time. We also want to know if we can help you to achieve any future goals.

Addiction Treatment that
Just Works

Individualized treatment programs delivered in a comfortable, relaxed setting promote healing in your recovery journey.

With all these procedures combined, we will be able to measure your level of addiction and work with you to create a program that will best suit your needs, preferences and meet your future goals. We want you to feel empowered as a collaborator in your own treatment so that you are invested and an active participant, to get the most out of your time with us.

You will then enter our home-like detox facility and live in there for the full time you are detoxing. Our staff will be available 24 hours per day if you need them, and they will monitor your progress and ensure you are eating right and staying hydrated as you go through our integrated medical detox program.

In medical detox we will provide you with:

  • Medications to help you deal with withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, pain, and restlessness
  • Medications to help stop drug cravings
  • Counseling to help you deal with any unwanted emotions or trauma that may come up
  • Behavioral therapy to help you begin to work on finding the root of your addiction
  • Dual diagnosis treatment for mental illness and other co-occurring conditions

This “whole-patient” approach to detox treatment will see you through the other side with as little suffering as possible and will provide you with all the support and medical care you will need to remain safe and comfortable.

How Long Does Drug Detox Last?

Timelines for detoxing vary, depending on factors like:

  • Which substances you are detoxing from
  • How long you have been using the substance
  • How much of the substance you were using each time and the frequency of use
  • The method of intake (smoking, oral ingestion, injecting, snorting)
  • Your physical health when entering the detox program
  • Your mental health when entering the detox program
  • Your history of drug use and relapsing

Symptoms may begin within two to six hours after your last use of the substance, and they can last for seven to ten days on average, although some substances like opioids take longer. The peak of your withdrawal symptoms will occur at around the 72-hour mark, after which you will begin to feel a little better every day until you are strong enough to move on to a rehab program.

The Stages of Detox

The stages of detox are as follows:

  • 2-6 hours after last drug use – mild symptoms begin to show up
  • Within 6 hours to 72 hours – symptoms gradually increase in severity, possibly becoming dangerous
  • Between 72 hours and one week – after symptoms peak your health will begin to improve
  • After approximately one week – you will be stable enough to move on to your next phase of treatment

Why go to a Medical Drug Detox?

Medical drug detox is the safest and most comfortable method of stopping drug or alcohol use. The body can go through shock or have other dangerous symptoms when detoxing is attempted outside of medical care. In a professional detox program, medical staff will monitor and manage your symptoms 24 hours per day to keep you safe.

For drug detox for Pittsburgh residents, go with Resurgence Behavioral Health. We offer a comprehensive detox program that uses a “whole patient” approach. This means we will:

  • Provide medications as needed to deal with uncomfortable symptoms like drug cravings, pain, and restlessness.
  • Oversee your progress 24/7 to ensure you are staying safe and the medications are working as planned.
  • Work with you using a trauma-informed approach, meaning we will make you an active collaborator in your own care. The treatments we give will be explained to you so you know what to expect, and we will not do anything you do not consent to.
  • Provide behavioral therapy and counselling right away so you can begin to work on getting to the root of your addiction and have a way to work through any unwanted emotions or trauma you may experience during detox.
  • Screen for mental illness and PTSD and provide dual diagnosis treatments as needed. This may include psychiatric medications and targeted therapy.

What is Drug Withdrawal?

Drug withdrawal is the process your body goes through when you stop using drugs as your brain readjusts to not having the chemicals it has become accustomed to. The drugs you were taking made changes to the brain’s reward system creating dependence, and when you are not providing the brain with these same drugs, your body will be thrown off balance and begin to produce withdrawal symptoms.

Common Withdrawal Symptoms

Although every person is different and each drug affects the body differently, some of the most common drug withdrawal symptoms when detoxing may include:

  • Headaches/body aches
  • Sweating or fever
  • Anxiety or agitation
  • Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea
  • Brain fog/confusion
  • Restlessness
  • Depression/dysphoria
  • Insomnia
  • Depersonalization
  • General flu-like symptoms
  • Drug cravings

These symptoms can range from mild to very intense and should not be taken lightly. Your body is going through a serious chemical change, and if not overseen by a medical professional, your withdrawal symptoms may become too difficult or dangerous to handle alone.

Alcohol Detox

Alcohol is one of the most dangerous substances to try and detox from on your own. The withdrawal symptoms can quickly jump from discomfort to delirium tremens (also known as the DTs), which can include hallucinations, agitation, and even deadly seizures and heart issues, and there is a danger of dehydration due to high fever.

Enrolling in our medical detox program at Resurgence will give you the safety and help to detox you need to get through this difficult period, with as few side effects as possible.
