MAT Drug Rehab Nashville Resurgence Behavioral Health

What is MAT Drug Rehab?

MAT drug rehab Nashville is a medical detox program that provides professional care from doctors and other medical personnel, along with counselors and licensed therapists to patients who want to quit using drugs and alcohol.

MAT stands for “medically assisted treatment” and is the safest method of detox. Some drugs including opioids, alcohol, and benzodiazepines are especially dangerous to try and quit on your own, as detoxing can cause a sudden onset of withdrawal symptoms that can range from aches and pains to deadly seizures or delirium tremens. Many people who are detoxing from drugs experience a range of anxieties, hallucinations, agitation, and other psychological distress, as well as physical pain and discomforts like muscle aches, tremors, flu-like symptoms, nausea and diarrhea, and more. Patients will also experience extreme drug cravings that can feel unbearable and cause relapse to occur.

Addiction Treatment that
Just Works

Individualized treatment programs delivered in a comfortable, relaxed setting promote healing in your recovery journey.

With medical detox, patients move into a detox center full-time, and FDA-approved medications are provided at prescription doses under 24-hour supervision. These medications block the worst of the withdrawal symptoms, help patients rest, and stop the drug cravings, so that detoxing is as painless as possible. Therapy and counseling can help with everything from providing breathing techniques to reduce stress to digging down to find the underlying root of the addiction. Psychiatric care is also provided to those who need a dual diagnosis treatment to deal with co-occurring mental health issues like depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder.

A successful MAT program will transition into an inpatient or outpatient rehab program, which will provide the patient with the continued support, medical and psychiatric care, therapy, and other treatments needed to achieve long-term recovery.

Benefits of MAT

The benefits of MAT drug rehab include:

  • Not having to suffer unnecessarily as your body detoxes from drugs and alcohol
  • Having the benefit of 24-hour medical oversight to ensure you remain safe as you detox, and to ensure your medications are working as planned
  • Being provided with therapy and counseling for emotional support, and so you can deal with unwanted fears, anxiety, thoughts, and trauma as they come up
  • Dual diagnosis treatment can be provided at the same time as detox so that you can begin to address any co-occurring mental health conditions you may have
  • Staying within the walls of our sober detox facility will keep you away from temptations, enablers, alcohol and drug dealers, taking away easy access to substances that will cause a relapse
  • MAT detox has been proven to help patients in their future work and relationships
  • MAT improves survival rates and treatment retention in most patients and improves the outcomes amongst pregnant women who have substance use disorders

Medications Used in MAT Drug Rehab

Some of the most common medications used in MAT drug rehab include:

  • Methadone – this is a medication that reduces the withdrawal symptoms and cravings of opioid drugs and has a smaller chance of addiction with proper medical use at prescription doses
  • Buprenorphine – this is a medication that stops the cravings that come with opioid withdrawal and lowers the uncomfortable sensations like restlessness and pain.
  • Naltrexone – this is a medication that is used in both alcohol and opioid addiction, as it blocks the “good” sedating or euphoric feelings that contribute to addiction, making it unpleasant to use these substances
  • Disulfiram – this is a medication prescribed after detox is complete. It causes unpleasant symptoms to occur if you drink alcohol, and is given to reinforce abstinence
  • Acamprosate – this is another medication that does not prevent alcohol withdrawal symptoms, but when given after detoxing will help you avoid using alcohol in the future due to unpleasant symptoms

MAT for Alcohol Addiction

Because the withdrawal symptoms that come with alcohol detox can quickly escalate to extremely uncomfortable and dangerous levels, medical detox is highly recommended, especially if you have been drinking for a long time or drinking large amounts of alcohol at once.

MAT alcohol treatment will help with the discomfort, as well as prevent serious side effects like seizures and high fever from occurring, and with the 24-hour medical supervision that is provided, if delirium tremens occurs you will have treatment available right away.

MAT for Opioid Addiction

The MAT treatment for opioid addiction includes the tapering off of the opioid, along with medications that not only block the opioid drugs from working properly, but they also stop the symptoms of opioid withdrawal without getting the patient high or creating a new addiction. The combination of these medications with therapy and dual diagnosis treatment creates a safe and effective program for anybody who wants to stop using opioid drugs in a careful and measured way.

Medications that Prevent Opioid Overdose

Naloxone (Narcan) is a medication that can be given to prevent opioid overdose if it is caught right away. This is a nasal spray or an injection that can temporarily reverse the effects of opioids in the body and can restore normal breathing. It is important if Naloxone is administered to call 911 or get the person’s medical attention right away, staying with them the entire time. The effects of some opioids, especially if laced with fentanyl, can continue after the Naloxone wears off, and the overdose may continue.
