What is Opioid Detox?

The first step in your addiction recovery process is to address the physical addiction that has developed to opioids within an opioid detox in Orange County. Before you are able to undergo the necessary work of addiction treatment and therapy, it is important that you allow your body and mind time to heal from the physiological dependencies and impacts with the support of a medical detox program

Beginning an opioid detox will invite you to reside within our treatment facility to start the process of ending your use of drugs and allowing your body the time it needs to heal from the impacts of drug addiction. While residing within an opioid detox program, you will have the ongoing supervision and support of onsite medical professionals and addiction therapists that will support you every step of the way. As your body begins to release the toxins and influences of opioids, you will feel the onset of withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms will vary in levels of severity depending on the specific history of your substance abuse. Those who have been engaging in heavy opioid abuse or have been engaging in long term substance abuse will often experience moderate to severe withdrawal symptoms. Opioid withdrawal symptoms are typically not life threatening but can produce significantly unpleasant and, sometimes, painful side effects that should be monitored and treated by licensed healthcare professionals.  As you have the onset of withdrawal symptoms, our team of nurses and physicians will offer you evidence based treatment methods that will help to reduce the severity of your withdrawal symptoms and minimize the onset of any drug cravings allowing you to remain stable and focused on completing your goals of overcoming opioid addiction. There can be psychological withdrawal symptoms that would benefit from the support of an addiction therapist that will support you in processing any emotions or thoughts that are occurring with the support of leading addiction therapy methods. As your body and mind begin to heal from the withdrawal symptoms and impacts of drug addiction, you will be ready to transition into a drug rehab program that will foster personal reflection and growth as you address and heal from the root causes of your addictive behaviors.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing Opioid Detox

Orange County residents that are ready to begin their opioid detox will have to consider the options available for drug detox and treatment programs. Your addiction is personal to you and your recovery journey should reflect the same. There is no one size fits all approach to healing from addiction as addiction treatment needs to be personalized to meet your own specific needs for treatment and healing.  It is important for your healing journey that you find an opioid detox that offers you the appropriate levels of care and treatment services that will meet your individual needs and goals for addiction recovery. When deciding on where you will go for opioid detox, there are some things to consider to ensure you find an appropriate detox program for you:

  • Levels of care offered. Each patient that enters into addiction treatment will have their own preference for the level and intensity of care that you are seeking. Before choosing a detox program, inquire about the staff that are on site including the various professionals available from medical professionals or therapists. By knowing the levels of support offered, you will be able to determine if you will be provided with the preferred levels of care that will foster optimal healing.
  • Ideal location. Each person is different for how they select a location for where they undergo drug detox. Some may prefer to stay close to home while others may choose to attend a detox center that is outside of your home environment.
  • Amenities that are offered within the treatment center. Each treatment center will offer a variety of amenities and specialized treatments or services. Speak with the detox center before attending to find out more about what is specifically offered within that location.
  • Types of detox and addiction treatments offered. Detox and treatment programs will offer a variety of evidence based treatment methods, alternative treatment approaches, and holistic healing methods.
  • Insurance coverage offered. There are often questions about the cost of attending an addiction treatment or detox program. Depending on the treatment facility, there will be different insurance coverages offered. Speaking with someone at the treatment facility will help you to discover if your insurance plan is covered within that treatment center.

Opioid Detox: A Timeline

Opioid detox will typically occur within 4 stages:

  • Anticipatory stage- This stage occurs 3 to 4 hours after you last used opioids. During this stage, individuals will often feel symptoms such as anxiety or fear about what will be coming within the detox process.
  • Early acute stage. During this stage which occurs within 8 to 10 hours after you last used opioids, you will begin to feel the onset of withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, and flu like symptoms along with drug cravings
  • Full acute stage. This occurs within 1 to 3 days in your detox process and is when patients will experience the peak of withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms will be moderate to severe and will need to be monitored by healthcare professionals as they can be painful and significantly uncomfortable.
  • Post acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS). Individuals can feel these symptoms up to 24 months after ending your use of opioids. Acute withdrawal symptoms are no longer present during this time but there will be other symptoms such as mood swings, insomnia, or lack of concentration along with triggers from environments or social interactions that pose a risk for relapse.
