Growing Closer To Death By Alcohol
Alcohol has the power to swallow lives just as drugs do. Alcoholism has no preference, and it rears its ugly face in all walks of life. Death by alcohol is easily prevented before drinking becomes a problem. Understanding the symptoms of alcoholism may be the very thing that prevents you from meeting your maker.
Stages of Alcoholism
- Alcoholism is the third leading preventable cause of death in the U.S.
- 62,000 are men
- 26,000 women
- There are an estimated 88,000 alcohol-related deaths yearly.
Stage One: Experimenting with Alcohol
Many “flirt” with alcohol in the beginning. They tend to think a sip or two will not do any harm. Those “sips” lead to more sips, and before they realize it, they have a glass in front of them with alcohol in it. Some practice this flirtation with alcohol to set themselves up to be able to drink socially.
They try different drinks to become acquainted with various cocktails, liquors, beers, and ales. Trying to find their “sweet spot” in a drink preference is typically accomplished through experimentation.
Stage Two: Social Drinking
They are now set to enjoy alcohol socially. They can confidently order a drink without appearing like a “greenhorn” to drinking. Attending social events, family gatherings, cookouts, and sporting events go hand-in-hand with enjoying a drink, or two, or three.
You get a buzz that you come to enjoy. The giddy feeling that comes from the effects of alcohol makes it easy to socialize and relax. Having a few drinks at home now becomes a way of relaxing.
Stage Three: Abuse of Alcohol
- The buzz of alcohol now becomes something they seek out to mask numerous things.
- Stress (work, relationships, finances, health, loss, trauma, etc.)
- Symptoms of a mental disorder
- Insomnia
- They build up a tolerance after drinking a set amount of alcohol. Because of this, they begin to drink more to induce a buzz. As tolerance increases, so does the amount of alcohol they consume.
- They begin to have blackouts where they have no recollection of where they were or what they did. This is highly dangerous because it puts you in danger as well as others.
- They have little regard for their own safety or others. They do activities (driving, cooking, swimming, etc.) while intoxicated.
- A lot of users will take prescription, illicit, or over-the-counter drugs while drinking.
Stage Four: Addiction to Alcohol
- So, now they are in a full-blown addiction to alcohol.
- They think to themselves that maybe cutting back a little on drinking is the right way to get a handle on things. However, the less they drink, the more they begin to feel withdrawal symptoms.
- Sweaty
- Shaking
- Nauseated
- Aches and pains
- Mood swings
- Anxiety
- To avoid these unpleasant symptoms, they drink to help ease those feelings. They find that repeated attempts to decrease our alcohol intake only ends up in drinking again and at increased amounts.
- They have angry outbursts breaking things and even physically harming those around them.
- The loss knocks on your door as you lose loved ones, friends, your job, your home, your dignity, and your vigor for life. You feel hopeless as you sink deeper into your drinking.
- You find that drinking alone is something you do a lot.
- The blackouts grow in frequency, leaving you in compromising situations.
- You receive news of liver disease, heart disease, stomach ulcers, and more.
Death by Alcohol
The final and late stage of alcoholism is death by alcohol. It can end up with you being rushed to the hospital because of:
- Cardiac failure
- Internal bleeding from stomach ulcers
- Liver failure
- Alcohol ketoacidosis
- Overdose with drinking and drugs
- Brain hemorrhage
- Seizure
- Pulmonary embolism
- Aortic stenosis
- Trauma caused by driving, falling, etc.
And all of these things are preventable!
You think to yourselves, “If I had only taken that first step in getting help, death by alcohol would not be staring me in the face!”
