Cigna Insurance Coverage for Drug & Alcohol Rehab Treatment
Cigna is a multinational healthcare and insurance company that is based in Connecticut and among the major medical insurance providers in the U.S. As such, it is one of the major insurance carriers accepted out of network at Resurgence Behavioral Health. When contemplating addiction treatment, it’s only natural for individuals to be concerned about the cost of substance abuse treatment, how to pay for it, and how much to expect insurance to cover. If you have a Cigna medical insurance policy, the following information can provide you with helpful information regarding your insurance and rehab coverage.
What Is Cigna Insurance and How Does It Work?
Cigna is a major health insurance provider that features a wide range of policy coverage. Like other major insurance carriers, Cigna’s coverage amounts may vary depending on whether policy holders (and their dependents) choose in-network or out-of-network facilities for treatment. Also, coverage amounts vary by location and the type of policy the individual has.
Cigna Insurance works by providing partial or full payment for approved medical treatment, including substance abuse treatment. Generally, users and medical facilities will consult the insurance provider to determine the coverage they will provide before proceeding with treatment to ensure that patients are aware of their financial obligations (if any) after coverage is approved or denied.
Typically, plans have a deductible that patients are responsible for paying in addition to their health insurance premiums. Cigna, like other providers, may offer additional no-cost services and programs to benefit policy holders.

What Are Cigna’s Types of Plans?
Cigna offers various types of health insurance plans with differing coverage amounts and benefits. This is commonplace among major insurance providers, and one of the reasons why there are so many questions about insurance coverage. Some Cigna plans may cover more of a person’s rehab stay than another plan. Currently, Cigna offers the following types of medical insurance plans:
- HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
- EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization
- POS (Point of Service)
- PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
Each type of plan has its own stipulations. Some people may have to pay out-of-pocket for their medical care until they reach a certain annual threshold such as $4,000. After that point, insurance begins to pick up all or, in some cases, half of the costs. Another Cigna plan, however, like an HMO, will begin to pay right away so long as the patient obtains treatment at a Cigna-approved provider (in-network) facility and the patient will pay a copay such as $50. There are many different ways that insurance plans bill and operate depending on the type of plan a person has.
Rehab Facilities That May Accept Cigna
Each rehab facility is different and may or may not accept Cigna plans. Fortunately, Resurgence Behavioral Health does accept Cigna plans. Keep in mind that your coverage amount depends on your individual insurance policy. Two people may have Cigna policies, but their policies differ, so their coverage amounts will differ. You Can contact Resurgence at 855-458-0050; we can check on your plan particulars and discuss your coverage with you in more detail.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Rehab Treatment?
Yes. Cigna Insurance does cover rehab treatment. Today, most major medical insurance carriers do provide coverage for substance abuse treatment as well as mental health treatment. The passage of the Affordable Care Act has made it mandatory for insurers to cover these types of treatment needs; however, coverage amounts vary. Insurers must meet a minimum threshold of coverage, but many plans exceed the minimum and may even cover the full cost.
How to Check Your Cigna Insurance Coverage
There are two ways you can check your Cigna coverage regarding substance abuse treatment. You can call Cigna directly and ask a representative to explain the coverage amounts / length of time for treatment your policy entitles you to. Or, you can contact Resurgence Behavioral Health and let our insurance specialists determine your insurance coverage amounts. We deal with questions of medical insurance daily, so we are well versed in specific insurance carriers and their plans.
What Does Cigna Insurance Cover?
Cigna does cover substance abuse treatment. It also covers things like preventative healthcare, vaccinations, non-preventative doctors’ visits, hospitalization, lab work, emergency room visits, physical therapy, and more. It does not cover unapproved medical care or elective procedures such as cosmetic surgery or alternative medicine therapies.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment?
Yes. Cigna does cover all or partial treatment for mental healthcare and substance abuse treatment. The amount of coverage depends on the type of plan the individual has. This coverage includes inpatient and outpatient treatment. However, it may not cover individual alternative treatments; in these cases, it’s best to contact the rehab or insurer to find out if specific therapies will be covered.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Inpatient Rehab?
Yes. Cigna will cover inpatient substance abuse treatment, including medical detox. The amount that your plan will cover depends on the type of plan you have with Cigna–and if you have any supplemental insurance. The length of time your treatment will cover (number of days) is also dependent on the type of plan you have.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Intensive Outpatient Rehab?
Intensive outpatient (IOP) rehab is addiction treatment that does not require an individual to reside at the rehab. These treatment programs usually run for 30, 60, or 90 days and require about 10 hours of rehab therapy each week for the program’s duration. Yes, Cigna will cover all or part of a person’s outpatient rehab treatment costs depending on the insurance plan they carry.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Partial Hospitalization?
Partial hospitalization (PHP) is a form of outpatient treatment, but involves spending more time each week in therapy–about 20 hours each week for the duration of the program. PHP programs, like IOPs, tend to run in increments of 30, 60, and 90 days. PHP programs are ideal for people who require a high degree of support but do not want or need to enroll in residential inpatient treatment. Usually, a person who enrolls in a PHP program is stable enough to spend their evenings at home and is able to get to their therapy sessions each week.
How Long Will Cigna Insurance Cover the Cost of Rehab?
Generally, Cigna’s insurance plans cover anywhere from one to six weeks of inpatient rehab treatment and between four and 12 weeks of outpatient treatment. Cigna has also covered multiple rehab stays for covered individuals. Again, the time frame for allotted coverage varies. The only way to find out exactly what Cigna covers for an individual is to check on their specific policy, which will list what costs the insured person is responsible for (i.e. the deductible / copays) and at what point insurance begins to cover the costs.
Cigna Insurance May Offer Insurance Coverage for the Following Addictions
Cigna Insurance will provide coverage for prescription drug addiction, illicit drug addiction, and alcohol addiction. If you have questions about your form of substance abuse, be sure to contact us.
What Are the Options if Cigna Insurance Does Not Cover the Cost of Rehab?
There are other financial options to explore if Cigna Insurance does not or no longer covers your cost of substance abuse treatment. Although Cigna does provide insurance coverage for behavioral health, a lapsed policy or maxed-out use could be an issue. Talk to a representative at Resurgence to find out about alternative ways to pay for rehab treatment.

The good news is that Cigna does provide all or partial coverage for addiction treatment and mental health treatment. It’s also easy for you to find out coverage amounts associated with your specific plan simply by contacting Resurgence Behavioral Health. Next Steps with Insurance Coverage for Rehab Treatment with Resurgence Behavioral Health
After Resurgence verifies your insurance coverage and answers your questions, you can begin to focus on what’s most important: getting better. We have streamlined our onboarding process to make it as easy and stress-free as possible for clients. We understand that what they need most is to begin their recovery process. Once insurance and payment matters are in hand, we can complete enrollment and provide an evaluation. The evaluation allows our clinicians to recommend the best course of treatment for each client. Some may require medication assisted treatment (yes, this is an insurance-approved treatment). Some may need medical detox.
Individualizing treatment plans for each person is the best way to help them achieve their long-term recovery goals. Many people require the full support that residential treatment offers with its 24-hour monitoring and robust level of support. Others may be stable and prefer a more flexible outpatient treatment program such as intensive outpatient treatment. These types of plans qualify for insurance coverage, so choosing one becomes what’s best for the individual’s needs. After the evaluation and enrollment process is completed, treatment can begin. At Resurgence, we provide empathetic care in our safe and positive setting. We offer multiple treatment approaches to ensure we target each aspect of the individual’s addiction.
